On our own, we’re both the centre of the universe but also great consumers Solitude can be great for inspiration. Living there long term is not good for us. The placebo: Synthetic connection. The great illusion that organisations spin to monetise your attention to hold onto you. (Eventually to get you to spend money somewhere so they can take a slice! Sorry, no slice for you.) Synthetic connection = ‘I have 6,500 friends/followers on X, Y or Z platform’ (but feel really low and lonely). Sure there may be meaning and the quantity will be awesome. You might even get some money for taking other people’s attention. Natural connection = ‘I see friends and family regularly and I’m in a routine whereby I’m in the same physical space, doing different things with a diverse array of friends, acquaintances and people I’ve never met. I’m not really fussed who follows or likes my digital content.’ Life is full. Why this matters: Synthetic connection is prioritised by default at the cost of nurturing natural connection.
