How AI can help protect coral reefs 👇👇👇 It was an absolute privilege to be given the opportunity to share some the work from my PhD at UCL and Zoological Society of London (ZSL) on the TEDxLondon stage 🪸🐠 The aim of my talk was to spread the message that there are countless ways we can leverage AI to tackle issues that really matter - I hope this talk will inspire others to take up this challenge 🤗 Some of the highlights: 1️⃣ We travelled to Hope Reef, epicentre of the worlds largest coral reef restoration program, where we discovered AI models can be trained to listen to reefs and track restoration progress 📈 2️⃣ Working with Google DeepMind we developed SurfPerch, an AI model which can help anyone rapidly build detectors for reef sounds - the secret? It was all in the birds 🦅🦜 3️⃣ Ever heard of bomb fishing? It’s decimating reefs across the tropics. We developed an AI model that counted >4600 in 6 months from just one single recorder 🎙️💣 I owe this work to countless mentors, collaborators and those who took a chance on me over the past few years 🙏 I finish my PhD this year and hope to continue finding new ways to contribute in this space #opentowork
