Ainhoa Ozcoidi started her career at TWD as a Designer, where she found the freedom to shape her path. Empowered to explore her broad interests, she quickly transitioned to an Engineer role, taking the opportunity to expand her skill set. As a Designer, Ainhoa turned concepts into detailed designs for heavy civils and offshore wind projects. But she wanted to better understand the technical foundations behind her work, so she considered how an engineering role might help her reach her learning goals. 💬 Knowing she had the flexibility at TWD, she discussed these goals with her lead, who offered her the opportunity to explore engineering temporarily or to fully transition to an Engineer role. Ainhoa chose the full transition, eager for continuous, hands-on experience in engineering. Now, she's using tools like PyTWD and RFEM, expanding her expertise, tackling new challenges, and continuing to contribute to projects that shape the future of sustainable energy. Across the globe, major ports are expanding to accommodate larger vessels and handle increased cargo volumes, enhancing operational efficiency and capacity. However, these processes often translate into prolonged construction periods, causing disruptions and escalating costs. Finding ways to speed up construction without sacrificing safety and quality is essential. At TWD, we have taken on these challenges with our innovative Automatic Piling Gate technology. By automating the alignment process, we have substantially reduced piling times and enhanced precision, ensuring accelerated project completion while raising firm safety standards. Our successful implementation of the Automatic Piling Gate in the Dover Port Expansion project serves as a testament to the efficacy of this technology. With this solution, we achieved a 50% increase in the piling rate, minimising disruptions to port activities and establishing a new standard for port construction. Off-site construction is gaining popularity thanks to its advantages in cost, capacity, and availability. However, when assets need to be transported by sea, several critical factors must be addressed to ensure a successful bid and project execution. Early-stage trade-offs in the following areas can significantly strengthen a company’s position: 📌Module Design: Large modules reduce the number of voyages but narrow down the pool of available vessels, making transportation more expensive. Additionally, module connection details and specific load cases are important factors to consider when sea transport is involved. 📌Vessel Selection: Choosing the right vessel requires thorough pre-work. Factors such as project suitability, deck strength, vessel availability, rates, and terms should be carefully evaluated. 📌Logistics De-risking: Conducting thorough project planning, defining design sea state, identifying sea transport downtime, and mitigating possible production or transport bottlenecks can contribute to a smooth logistics operation. 📌Port Feasibility: Considerations like quay strength, water depth, and harbor maneuverability are crucial in selecting suitable loading and offloading facilities. With nearly two decades of sea transport experience and hundreds of successful projects annually, TWD possesses the expertise to support you in this venture, strengthening your position and preventing costly delays. Winds of Change – Last week, we had the privilege of hosting an insightful event at TWD, bringing together thought leaders to discuss the future of U.S. politics and its impact on the global energy sector. Our keynote speaker, Willem Post, a renowned expert in U.S. politics and foreign policy, delivered a powerful talk on the upcoming U.S. elections and the effects they may have on international energy policy. His insights sparked conversations about the future of the energy landscape in these transformative times. After Willem’s keynote, Fergus Kavanagh OLY and Lianne Klaver (Ørsted), gave presentations about the offshore wind market trends and experiences in USA followed by a dynamic panel discussion featuring industry leaders, including Ronald van Waaijen (Heerema Marine Contractors), Eric van Zuthem (Ballast Nedam), Paul van Weert (Shell), and Jurjan Blokland (Van Oord). The panel, moderated by Wesley de Groot, explored the intersection between U.S. policy and global offshore energy trends, offering first-hand perspectives from the companies shaping the future of the sector. A big thank you to everyone who joined us, from our incredible speakers to all the participants who made this event an engaging and thought-provoking experience! Demolition of a 40m Steel Giant 🦺 Taking down a 13-story structure is no small feat, especially with critical infrastructure nearby. But that's exactly what our team in Greece accomplished with the strategic demolition of a derelict power station's 40-meter-tall steel filter building. The real challenge was achieving a safe, controlled collapse without damaging the nearby chimney stack and tank. We made educated assumptions about the material properties to ensure stability during weakening but also a smooth demolition process:   1.     Strategic Weakening: Precise cutouts were made at key points to weaken the building and to promote a controlled failure. Initially, we assumed weaker steel properties during the weakening stage to prevent an uncontrolled collapse. For the pulling stage, we assumed stronger steel properties to maximize the required pulling force and to achieve a more controlled demolition.   2.     Controlled Pulling: We increased the 10tn winch's capacity through a triple reeving system and by anchoring an extra pulley to an existing tank that offered the required anchorage for free. This boosted the pulling force to 30 tons without requiring additional counterweights or foundations.   This paves the way for future decommissioning stages at the power plant. The project contributes to a cleaner future by supporting the transition away from coal-fired power. A huge shoutout to Alexandros Byron Bezas, Vasilios Giamaios, SOLERGON SA’s site team, and everyone involved in the project! Their innovative thinking and dedication made this success story possible.
