About us

The Access to Justice Foundation is a registered charity established in 2008 by the Advice Services Alliance, Bar Council, CILEx and the Law Society to receive and distribute financial resources to help get free of charge (pro bono) legal assistance to those who need it most. The Foundation receives funding from: (i) The pro bono costs programme as the beneficiary of pro bono costs orders made by the courts in civil proceedings where the successful party was represented pro bono (ii) 'It's not just peanuts' campaign under which law firms donate their unclaimed client account balances; (iii) General donations. Any funds received are ploughed back into the pro bono community with the Foundation distributing them to advice services including Law Centres, CABx, and Legal Support Trusts.

We’re certainly a sector of solutions! This morning was spent identifying the challenges facing organisations working in the advice sector and the support that our private and professional sector colleagues could lend to addressing the unmet legal need that compounds the increasing demand for free legal advice. We look to our colleagues at LawtechUK to understand the unique position of charities providing free legal advice and support LawTech initiatives to lend their skills and expertise to the challenges we’ve identified. This evening we hear about the Power of Pro Bono at the 2024 launch of Pro Bono Week UK, a chance to celebrate the contribution of our expert and dedicated legal profession in meeting the legal needs of people, places, and communities most in need. I’m so fortunate to be able to work with the very best of the legal profession; those who are dedicated not only to helping those most in need but also empowering the incoming generation of lawyers to give back to their communities. The main takeaways is that, across all these different part of the sector, we share the same motivation - to improve the lives of the people who need us the most, today is a chance to celebrate working together to centre and serve these communities. (The secondary takeaway is a brilliant chance to catch up. With amazing colleagues Laura and Alex) #probonoweek #pbwlaunch #accesstojustice #justicetech #lawtech #legaltech #probono

  • 📢 In the spirit of Pro Bono Week UK we're spotlighting some of the incredible work undertaken by our 2024 Pro Bono programme funded partners to provide access to justice for disabled people across the country. We know from our Value of Justice For All report that disabled people are disproportionately affected by the rising demand for legal advice, with 51% of people seeking advice experiencing a long-standing illness or disability. In addition to this, disabled people face significant barriers accessing support services and navigating complex welfare systems. Our 2024 Pro Bono grants programme will help 11 organisations, including Citizens Advice Braintree and South Essex, Disability Rights UK, Z2K - Fighting Poverty and University House Legal Advice Centre to bring legal support to more disabled people when they need it most. This work was made possible by lawyers generating Pro Bono Costs Orders and feeding funds back into the system! • 📢 It’s Pro Bono Week! 📢 Pro Bono Week is all about uplifting the work of legal professionals across the country providing free legal support to those who need it. In addition to delivering much needed help, pro bono work has the power to raise money to ensure the sustainability of these free legal advice initiatives into the future. Pro Bono Costs Orders ensure the value of pro bono work is recognised and fed back into supporting the delivery of services to marginalised communities. This year, thanks to the efforts of amazing pro bono lawyers securing Pro Bono Costs Orders, we have been able to distribute just over £500,000 in grants across 11 organisations including Advocate, LawWorks, A4ID - Advocates for International Development, Asylum Support Appeals Project. This funding will ensure vital pro bono services can carry on working to help the people, places, and communities most in need. Advice doesn't just benefit individual clients, it benefits us all. Research from The Access to Justice Foundation and The Bar Council of England and Wales has shown that investing in free legal advice could save the Treasury up to £12 billion in the next 10 years. The bottom line: provide the advice sector with sustainable funding, and we'll provide society with much more in return.

Mr C has mental health, learning and literacy difficulties. His housing association landlord was trying to evict him because he had fallen into rent arrears. Southwark Law Centre found that Mr C wasn’t receiving the Housing Benefit he was eligible for.

The Law Centre defended the eviction claim with a disability discrimination counterclaim, and has since resolved further problems Mr C was facing with benefits. Mr C kept his home and was spared owing rent arrears of almost £14,000.

Just before Helen started a new job, she was told by her employer that the contract was being withdrawn because of a negative reference.

It turned out her reference had been completed by the wrong person and the incorrect boxes had been ticked. Helen appealed to her new employer and a new reference was sent, but they had already lost trust. Helen was without income, borrowing money from family and friends.

Greater Manchester Law Centre’s employment solicitor wrote to Helen’s new employer and suggested reaching a settlement to cover her loss of earnings. This was eventually agreed and Helen also managed to find a new job in the meantime.

  • The numbers tell a compelling story: free legal advice is not just a moral imperative, but a smart economic investment. As we mark AdviceUK #AdviceSaves week, let's delve into the substantial public savings generated by advice services, as revealed in the "Value of Justice for All" report we published earlier this year with The Bar Council of England and Wales. Our research indicates that advice services save the government a staggering £12 billion over the next ten years. This figure represents a multitude of individual success stories and systemic improvements: ·      Reduced strain on courts and tribunals as issues are resolved early ·      Decreased demand for crisis interventions in housing and social care ·      Lower healthcare costs as health outcomes of legal issues are mitigated ·      Increased tax revenue as employment issues are resolved ·      Reduced administrative costs to benefit payments as correct entitlements are secured But the true value of these services extends beyond mere cost savings. By providing access to justice, we're fostering a society where: ·      Rights are protected and upheld, regardless of economic status ·      Marginalised individuals are empowered to navigate complex systems ·      Communities are strengthened through increased stability and reduced poverty ·      Trust in institutions is bolstered, promoting social cohesion ·      The rule of law is reinforced, underpinning our democratic society These economic benefits have the potential to create a positive feedback loop, as public funds are saved and reinvestment in services, further expanding access to justice and amplifying the positive impacts. This #AdviceSaves week, we're calling on policymakers, funders, and other sector leaders to recognise the tremendous value of free legal advice. It's an investment that pays dividends not just in financial terms, but in the creation of a fairer, more efficient, and more harmonious society.
