Broadcast Media Production and Distribution
A podcast where we discuss how different development themes are related to decolonisation.
About us
Welcome to The Big Decolonization Dialogue, where we discuss how different development themes are related to decolonisation. Throughout this series, we’ll be talking with academics, activists, and practitioners to collectively reflect on how to better wear this lens both in our research and everyday lives. So, Who are we? A group of PhD students from different parts of the world across three universities in the UK engaging in transdisciplinary research around water, sanitation and hygiene. And because we are also crazy about challenging power inequalities globally, we have all joined a student-led Academic Inequalities Working Group - we’ll cover more on that later! So, why decolonization you ask? Cuz guess what! Almost every 6 days, a country celebrates its independence from its colonizers! which means, whenever you are listening to this, there’s a high chance that a country is celebrating its independence from structures of exploitation and oppression this week - these structures which are still in place today. And we firmly believe wearing a decolonization lens is the way forward to address these historical and current injustices. With this context, join us in this collective journey of liberation where we bring in our experiences from Brazil, India, Germany, and the UK! And we are sure, you will love our speakers as much as we do!

Episode VIII - Decolonising Environmentalism 💡 https://lnkd.in/eRFzjYjm In this episode, we tackle the complex and often hypocritical landscape of global environmentalism through a decolonial lens. We scrutinize the actions of the corporations and governments in the Global North that profess to champion green initiatives while engaging in environmentally destructive practices both domestically and abroad. This dissonance not only undermines genuine sustainability efforts but also perpetuates environmental racism and systemic inequities. Our conversation also sheds light on the pervasive issue of environmental racism, examining how communities of colour and Indigenous people are often situated in areas with higher levels of pollution and fewer environmental protections. We explore the historical and ongoing injustices that have led to these disparities and discuss the urgent need for systemic change. Join us as we hear from Avijit Michael, Shweta Narayan, and Alison Parker- environmental justice advocates, community leaders, and scholars- who are working to decolonise environmentalism. They share insights and strategies for creating an equitable and truly sustainable future, one that holds the powerful accountable and uplifts the voices of those most affected by environmental degradation. Episode VII - Decolonising Climate Change https://lnkd.in/e47meQGV In this episode, we delve into the pressing need to decolonise climate change policy, focusing on the pivotal role of historical emissions by the Global North and the critical importance of equitable solutions for the Global South. Our discussion highlights the disproportionate responsibility borne by industrialised nations for the current climate crisis and explored how their legacy of emissions has exacerbated vulnerabilities in less developed regions. 💡 Episode Six - Decolonising Aid (Part II) is out now! 💡 https://lnkd.in/e5zxWtmW In the second part of this conversation on decolonising aid, we hear from Mariam Zaqout, PhD, a Palestinian academic working in the UK, who has explored the deep inequalities, contradictions and challenges inherent in delivering aid for improving access to sanitation in Gaza. Our final guest, Jon Allen, discusses the challenges and opportunities of being a US-based leader of an organisation that works locally, addressing the complex issues of water and sanitation service delivery. Episode V Part 1- Decolonising Aid, out now! In the first part of the conversation on decolonising aid, our guests, Lata Narayanaswamy and Raman VR, represent academia, practice, lived experiences, and leadership in the aid sector. In our conversation, they interrogate whether it is possible to talk about decolonising the aid sector when aid is largely based on the continuation of a colonial mindset and colonial practices. Unless we really address the power relations between donors and recipients, can we even consider that it is possible to decolonise aid? Listen to our podcasters engage in intriguing conversations with our guests. 🎧 Exclusively on Spotify! 🎧 Join us on the journey to decolonise minds https://lnkd.in/ex6dY68v Follow for more updates! Episode Four is live💡 https://lnkd.in/eXb8SFtg In this episode, we discuss the process of decolonising academic research and understanding the ways inequity manifests between researchers. We have J'Anna-Mare Lue, lead author of the paper "Principles of increasing equity in WASH research: understanding barriers faced by LMIC WASH researchers", Tamara Megaw, co-author of the report "Authorship and recognition in knowledge production in water sanitation and hygiene (WASH): A guidance note", and Linda Ndiweni, a water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) researcher and lecturer from the National University of Science and Technology, Zimbabwe. Lais Freitas Moreira dos Santos and the guests have a very honest conversation about what it entails to perform decolonial research within persisting colonial academic structures. Episode Three - Global Health is live 🎧 In this episode, we hear from practitioners and academics about their views on decolonising global health; what does decolonisation mean for them? What progress has been made? What would decolonised global health look like? Would it still exist? And most importantly, what can we all do next? Our distinguished panel features Yadhurshini Raveendran, David McCoy, Viviana Olivetto, Sarah Brittingham, Doreen Tuhebwe and Michelle Amri, each bringing unique perspectives and expertise to this critical discourse. We also have water governance expert Euphresia Luseka to open and close the episode.
