Ultimately, 2023 served as a transition year for adidas. The company’s full-year, currency neutral sales came in flat — significantly better than the high-single-digit decline it originally anticipated. Importantly, Adidas was able to reverse its slide and restart positive momentum, a trend that carried into 2024, which saw currency-neutral sales through the first half rise 10 percent versus the same period the year before. In October, Adidas raised its full-year forecast, predicting sales would grow about 10 percent, even as the company still felt the sting of its lost YEEZY business. In the time since ending its Yeezy line, however, Adidas’ achievements put the company on better footing in a shorter period than most would have anticipated. Its accomplishments resulted from a number of moves made by Gulden and Adidas’ leadership to enable the brand’s comeback. Fashion has tread carefully with the US presidential election. Few brands have made an endorsement, let alone incorporated politics into their marketing. Where they have engaged, it’s often been along the lines of “vote” campaigns. But even as retailers avoid outward displays of partisan politics, they’re working overtime behind the scenes to prepare for the next administration. While Kamala Harris is expected to stick to the general contours of President Joe Biden’s policies, Donald Trump is another matter entirely, from his tariff plan to his views on immigration, climate change, Ukraine and beyond. And it's not just companies in the US that will be watching the results on Tuesday night. Though it’s Americans voting, their choice will have a profound impact on the global fashion industry.
