Yesterday we and our partners CREME, The Centre for Business in Society (CBiS) at Coventry University and Citizens UK ran the first co-design workshops in Aston Business School for our 2-year research project EMPOWER, exploring financial wellbeing development in ethnic minority led businesses – what is working in helping grow resilient businesses, and what more could be done in practice, and at policy level, to aid this further.   The team have been meeting and interviewing Birmingham-based businesses in the past few months trying to understand how they have been managing money especially post-covid. In the workshop we had a chance to hear our participants sharing details of what money means to them, the various financial challenges they have been facing and how they’ve been coping, as well as how their families have been involved in supporting their businesses.     Entrepreneurs always juggle between their businesses and families. For ethnic minority businesses particularly, there is often a wider community that also comes into play in growing and supporting business ventures. Many in the room say they recognised the issues of long work hours, the guilt of sacrificing time with family and particularly with children (and wider caring responsibilities), and the difficulty in getting finance and support etc. However, many said that there is an upside too for their families in that they share a sense of fulfilment when the businesses manage to overcome the problems and become more resilient.    We were very pleased to have Alex Christopoulos, the Director of this project's funder the Aviva Foundation, joining the event, as well as Paul Basil from the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Growth Hub to share information on funding. We’re congratulating Professors Elena Gaura and Sally Dibb on their appointment as co-chairs for the pilot panels of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2029! Elena, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research (Academic Engagement), will be co-chairing the Unit of Assessment (UoA) panel for Computer Science and Informatics, while Sally, a researcher within our The Centre for Business in Society (CBiS) at Coventry University, will be co-chairing the UoA panel for Business and Management Studies. The pilot focuses on developing innovative assessment processes that reflect an expanded definition of research excellence, emphasising the people, culture and environments that underpin research in the UK. As co-chairs, Elena and Sally will help to refine these assessment processes, provide feedback to the REF team, promote the framework and contribute to institutional-level recommendations for #REF2029 guidance. Elena and Sally will bring with them a wealth of experience, having both previously served on the #REF2021 panels. Elena has led initiatives such as helping women scientists reach leadership positions and driving AI and digital skills development in the West Midlands, while Sally is a recipient of the Academy of Marketing Lifetime Achievement Award.
