Yesterday, we were treated to Financial Times' Claer Barrett's thoughts as our guest speaker at the Conference. There were so many great insights and opinions, so we thought we should share a few for those who couldn’t make it and for those who had enjoyed the lunch too much! Economic Insights: 📈 - Property remains a crucial lens on the wider economy - SMEs continue as the backbone of the UK's economic structure, but this wasn’t recognised in the Budget. - The budget was a budget of 'slow growth' at best. US and Global Impact: 🏈 - Concerns about a potential US economic downturn due to President Trump's policies, including increased tariffs and immigration changes, could drive the US into recession, which could, in turn, ripple across global markets. UK Policy Challenges: 📃 - Critique of the UK government’s current strategies, which seem more restrictive on growth despite promises of enhancement, with key areas like national insurance, minimum wage, and employer obligations poised for significant changes next year. Employment and Industry Effects: 🏭 - Potential consequences include rising unemployment costs, accelerated shifts towards AI and outsourcing, and significant impacts on childcare, social care, and the taxation of family farms. - The cost of employing someone will go up by £1000 next year Complex Growth Landscape: 🔄 - The dual challenges of Brexit and Trump’s potential to spark a trade war complicate growth, with reliance on China to help many nations achieve their net zero targets (e.g. battery production). This comes at a critical time for the world economy and environment. Three reasons to be Optimistic: 😁 1.       Angela Rayner's proactive stance on planning. 👷🏻♂️ 2.       We are seeing significant regional investments outside of London, levelling up is happening. 💸 3.       We are finally seeing the recovery of the retail sector adjusting to the digital marketplace dynamics, with a knock-on effect on retail property prices. 🏪 With the final rallying cry to make sure we all stand up and support the farmers....and not just so Claer can continue her twitching! 🦅

And that is our 60th anniversary celebrations drawn to a close. What a fantastic event, great to see so many members, partners and guests.
