Creating lasting and shared prosperity for the nation

About us

The Crown Estate is a significant national landowner with a diverse £16bn portfolio that includes urban centres and development opportunities; one of the largest rural holdings in the country; Regent Street and St James’s in London’s West End; and Windsor Great Park. We also manage the seabed and much of the coastline around England, Wales and Northern Ireland, playing a major role in the UK’s world leading offshore wind sector. We are a unique business with a unique heritage. Set up by an Act of Parliament, and occupying a space between the public and private sector, we act independently and commercially to grow the value of the portfolio for the nation. We are a company for the country and all of our net revenue profit goes to the Treasury for the benefit of the nation’s finances. This has totalled more than £4bn over the last ten years. Through our activities and investments, we create national environmental, social and financial value both for now and into the long term.

Last night we welcomed stakeholders from across #marine and #offshore industries along with nature bodies for the launch of the Marine Delivery Routemap and accompanying Future of Offshore Wind report.   The discussion covered the need for broader systems-thinking, how to build on the existing evidence base and how to ensure nature is properly supported alongside the continued growth of critical sectors such as offshore wind.   Thank you to all who attended. These important conversations will continue as we move forward with the Routemap and the next chapter for offshore wind – helping ensure the seabed continues to support nature, communities, vital industries and the environment for future generations. As part of the continual development of our Marine Delivery Routemap, we intend to work with partners to look at how specific #MarineIndustry sectors can evolve over the years ahead. This starts today with #OffshoreWind and we’ve published our thinking on the Future of Offshore Wind, the first publication on behalf of the exciting Great British Energy: The Crown Estate partnership! The report sets out our early thinking on the ‘what, when, where and how’ to bring to market an additional 20-30GW of offshore wind leasing opportunity by 2030, for delivery out to 2040. We’re now seeking input and feedback from industry and wider stakeholders to help shape our approach to seabed leasing. Fantastic to set out today an ambitious vision for a more co-ordinated and long-term approach to managing future demand upon the UK’s seabed – our Marine Delivery Routemap! The potential of the seabed to accelerate the delivery of #NatureRecovery, our transition to #CleanEnergy, and create jobs and opportunities across the UK is huge, but increasing demand makes a holistic approach to its management crucial. Our ground-breaking Marine Delivery Routemap will help us to develop a world-class whole system approach that creates lasting and shared prosperity for the nation. Working in collaboration with partners and stakeholders across a range of sectors, Routemap will help provide visibility and certainty for developers across a range of sectors, identify new areas for biodiversity and nature restoration, and support the prosperity of onshore communities, among other ambitions. Read the Marine Delivery Routemap below to find out more about this exciting and ambitious vision to drive the energy transition and nature recovery! https://lnkd.in/eHSitm5h

Congratulations to Huub den Rooijen who was awarded an Honorary CBE this summer for his services to #RenewableEnergy and #MarineConservation! Huub retired from The Crown Estate two years ago where he was Managing Director of our marine portfolio. He has been a passionate and committed advocate for the UK’s #OffshoreWind sector since its earliest days. He has championed world-leading evidence and data, strong cross-sector partnerships, and international collaboration to attract investment, better protect the natural world and support the UK’s transition to a decarbonised and energy secure future. https://lnkd.in/eiDcWi94

📑 New evidence published from the Offshore Wind Evidence and Change Programme Our £50 million investment in the Offshore Wind Evidence and Change Programme (OWEC) funds a range of projects to de-risk and accelerate the delivery of offshore wind whilst reducing the pressure on nature and proactively restoring the marine environment. This aims to support the UK’s position as one of the most attractive places to invest in offshore renewables, whilst enabling our marine and coastal ecosystems to thrive. This latest publication from the Predators and Prey Around Renewable Energy Developments (PrePARED) project shares initial findings from work to assess the responses of harbour porpoises to offshore wind pile-driving, a key step in the construction of offshore wind farms. The paper reveals a critical need to dig deeper into existing data to validate key recommendations made about the existing Effective Deterrent Range (EDR) for this species. This could transform our understanding of underwater construction noise and the approaches used to assess and mitigate impacts on this species. Find out more about our investment in the Offshore Wind Evidence and Change Programme here: https://lnkd.in/euG-mpBk

📢 PrePARED Project Announcement    The University of Aberdeen, as part of the #PrePAREDProject, have released a report assessing the responses of harbour porpoises to offshore wind farm pile-driving.    This report provides a direct estimate of an Effective Deterrent Range (EDR), which are used to assess the spatial scale of disturbance, for the installation of monopiles without noise abatement.     You can read the full report, and report summary here: https://bit.ly/3WKy2uI The PrePARED Project is funded by The Crown Estate OWEC programme and Crown Estate Scotland.

We're delighted to be supporting this very special initiative at Projekt Renewable GY, established to inspire a new generation about all things nature, conservation and renewable energy related in Grimsby and beyond.   Ever since we first heard about Projekt Renewable, we've been so excited to support Richard Askam and the team in creating an amazing space where people in the community can come together to learn more about what is happening on the seabed and how the offshore and onshore environment interact.   With our space now up and running in Alexandra Dock, complete with its own living wall, we are looking forward to seeing all the fun that will come with Plant + Paddle and how, under the guidance of a wonderful team, it sparks curiosity in the marine environment that could last a lifetime. https://lnkd.in/eY75hFEg   #PRG #Grimsby #PlantandPaddle #nature

How do we even begin to describe how ace yesterday was?! Wholesome, heart-filling, vibrant, energetic, inspiring, our first Plant + Paddle session was all of these things and more. It was everything we hoped it would be. Moving from paddle boarding to planting, canoeing to creative arts, the children shifted from one activity to the other full of excitement and enthusiasm, much like the cracking delivery team that has pulled together to bring this programme of events to life. For us as a team, the day ran like clockwork, with Hannah Woods, Martin Woods, Joanne Lord, James Elliott, Richard Askam and Toni-Ann Buckle-Weavers sharing the same ethos and passion. Our ‘Environmental A-team’ may have admitted to a few aches by the end of the day, but none of us would change a thing and we can’t wait to do it all again on Monday. Oh and, bonus… three bags of rubbish was removed from the River Freshney too! For booking enquiries please get in touch with Joanne on admin@targetgy.co.uk, and for sponsorship enquiries or to get involved or help with the delivery, please drop info@projektrenewable.com a message and we’ll be in touch.
