You are a #projectmanager in charge of developing a new software application. Initially, it appears to be a straightforward task with a clearly defined problem falling in the "Clear" domain. You have a well-defined scope, precise requirements, and a skilled team. It's similar to measuring your carbon footprint, where you follow a defined process, and the outcome is predictable. 🌟 However, as the project progresses, unexpected challenges emerge. Users require changes, and your team encounters technical difficulties. This is where it transitions into the "Complicated" domain. To navigate this territory, you #consult industry best practices, involve experts, and carefully analyse the situation. Much like calculating the carbon footprint of a large organization, a structured approach is crucial. 🌟 Now, Imagine you're working on the project, and suddenly, legal issues related to data privacy regulations arise, putting the project at risk. At the same time, stakeholders demand faster progress. Your boss calls you in, and the situation enters the "Complex" domain. Here, more than linear thinking will be required. Your decisions and actions are interconnected and trigger reactions, just like dealing with carbon reduction's social and fiduciary implications. You must take small, cautious steps, adapt quickly, and be prepared for unforeseen consequences. 🌟 On the project, suppose a cyberattack compromises your project's data a month before the deadline, plunging you into "Chaos." You'll need to act quickly to mitigate the damage and regain control, like reacting decisively when your project data is corrupted. Your actions aim to restore order and move back into one of the other domains. 🌟 Uncertainty is standard, but taking a moment to gather information and assess can lead to clarity. Dave Snowden has been putting the finishing touches on the 𝐂𝐲𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞 this week. It will be ready for pre-orders around the 25𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡. The basic form is a field notebook around 100 pages long and designed to fit easily into a pocket and act as a quick reference guide. 𝐂𝐲𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧® is one of a body of methods and frameworks in the wider field of naturalising sense-making; in other words, '𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐭?' Naturalising refers to the use of natural science as an overall constraint on the valid use of methods and tools. 🌟 Linking this to some broader philosophical concepts, it is generally accepted that epistemology follows ontology -in other words, once we've established what we know, we can ask how we know that information. Your executives may be assuming that complexity is solely a lack of detail or lack of effective process, which would entirely be resolvable, but we know that in reality, 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞. 🌟 Once we accept that premise, we can start to identify the knowledge components of #complexity. Most famously said by Donald Rumsfeld but credited to Luft and Ingham (1955), there are many types of knowledge, as outlined in the grid below. These are explained using the idea of the "𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐧: 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟" and the "𝐮𝐧𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐧: 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧'𝐭 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟". These words can be combined to explain the relationship between the world as it is and the world we understand.
