International Consultant, former HMI, College/School Principal, Author ‘Secondary Curriculum Transformed’Hon Fellow Univ of Birmingham; FCCT Board Member;ESB Patron; passion for ALL young people to succeed in education.

While educators are being ‘ consulted ‘ on the current Curriculum Review -it begs the question asto why young people are not? Education affects children and young people’s life chances for generations and is a political football depending on the vagaries of who is the government of the day . Young people in the UK are arguably the least informed in Western Europe and most are virtually ignorant of the different political ideologies or not interested. Politics is not taught in schools because professional teachers allegedly cannot be trusted not to ‘influence children’ with their own beliefs ! When I taught in France I could hold an intelligent debate with my 16 year old students as politics was part of citizenship and children encouraged to discuss and exoress their views. Conversely when I taught A level French literature -Jean Paul Sartre and the significance of the Vichy Government during WW2 - to 17-18 year olds in England, I ended up explaining the differences between local and central government in England! They had not a clue !! A shocking 92% of students think that the views of young people are not represented in politics. The responses from this survey of year 10 students published in The Day show that our education system is failing to teach young people about their country and the politics that control it. None could name their constituency, and only 8% could name their local MPMember of Parliament. There are 650 MPs representing people in different areas of the UK.. Only a third of the students fully understood mortgages, payslips and taxes. All students wanted this to be taught in school. Ninety-two percent of students want politics to be taught in school, because only 17% understand what the two Houses of Parliament do and how they are different to each other. We live in a democracy but are not empowering our young people to vote . The men and women who struggled and fought to get the vote would be shocked if they were alive today and could see how shabbily we treat our young people. Consequently I would strongly urge the Curriculum and Assessment Review panel and the Children’s Commissioner to encourage ALL schools to submit a response from their students on how they would like to shape the future of THEIR education. I believe it is so important to empower young people and to give them back agency of their learning and what they learn at school . Wouldn’t you agree ?
