Member of The Elders, Helen Clark, responds to the legislation on UNRWA currently progressing through Israel's Parliament, stating: “It is deeply concerning that legislation is advancing through the Knesset that would designate UNRWA as a terrorist organisation and revoke its immunities and privileges. If passed, this would be an outrageous attack on a vital arm of the UN, which would have devastating consequences for UNRWA’s life-saving operations in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem. This cannot be allowed to happen. Any attempt by Israel to end UNRWA’s operations in Gaza and across the OPT would violate the UN Charter and compound Israel’s violations of International Humanitarian Law. This must be met with a decisive response by UN member states, particularly Israel’s main military allies.”

Mary Robinson sends congratulations to Nihon Hidankyo on receiving the 2024 #NobelPeacePrize. She urges leaders to heed the warnings of the survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the hibakusha, and build a world free from the threat of nuclear weapons. Read her comment in full: “I congratulate Nihon Hidankyo on being awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to raise awareness of the horrifying consequences of nuclear weapons. This deserved recognition comes as a reckless new nuclear arms race is unfolding and ongoing conflicts have again seen the use of these devastating weapons openly raised. The witness testimony of the hibakusha, the survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, must shake leaders from their dangerous complacency on nuclear risks and inspire renewed commitment to nuclear disarmament. A nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought; the survival of humanity and our planet depends on it.” - Mary Robinson, Chair of The Elders

To avert the worst impacts of climate change, the world must reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by at least 43% by 2030. This is already a massive task, and one that gets harder the longer decisive action is delayed. The world needs to curb planet warming emissions and transition away from all fossil fuels much faster. Leaders must increase their political ambition and financial commitments, acting decisively and in a way that is just and fair to all countries, communities and individuals. https://lnkd.in/eAU9xnrG #ClimateAction
