💡 In an industry rapidly evolving and influenced by regulations, Software-Defined Automation is crucial for maintaining a competitive edge, says Fabrice Jadot, next gen automation SVP at Schneider Electric. SDA transforms operational technology by decoupling hardware and software, allowing industrial companies to mix and match automation technologies into one seamless system. This approach enables devices and equipment to connect freely across architecture layers, regardless of the manufacturer, fundamentally changing the traditional approach to automation and design, impacting everything from scalability, adaptability and resiliency. 💡 Patrick Faulkner, lead engineer at component supplier Accu, looks at how engineers are working with conservation organisations to help protect some of the world’s most vulnerable species. At a time when many species worldwide are endangered, being able to track and gather data effectively using the latest technology is extremely important. Engineers are therefore working closely with conservation organisations to ensure that precision components used in these assemblies can withstand the harsh environments and resist corrosion and degradation. Carbon fibre reinforced composites have been sent to the International Space Station (ISS) to undergo testing in the challenging conditions of low Earth orbit. Developed at University of Bristol, these new generation space materials could be used to build future space stations, spacecraft, or a new ISS. They will be placed on the Bartolomeo platform, a payload hosting facility on the ISS, where they will orbit Earth up to 9,000 times over the next 12 to 18 months at speeds of 17,000mph. A study has found that earthworms are adversely affected by bio-based materials that are being used as an environmentally friendly alternatives to plastics. Bio-based materials - which are used in textiles and products including clothing, wet wipes and period products - emit microfibres into the environment through the laundry cycle, the application of sewage sludge as fertilisers, or through wear and tear of textile products. Despite increasing quantities of bio-based products being produced and sold globally, there has been little research to assess their potential impact on species and ecosystems. Now, a study detailed in @Environmental Science and Technology tested the effects of conventional polyester fibres and two bio-based fibres – viscose and lyocell – on earthworms. A major report from the newly formed National Energy System Operator says that a decarbonised grid by 2030 is possible, but only if ‘pace is prioritised over perfection’. Commissioned by energy secretary Ed Miliband, the Clean Power in 2030 (CP30) Report is NESO’s first significant policy contribution since it was spun out of National Grid Plc in October 2024, becoming a fully public entity. NESO said achieving CP30 is ‘challenging but achievable’ and that clean sources can produce at least as much power as the island of Great Britain consumes by 2030.
