About us

The Fawcett Society is the UK’s leading membership charity campaigning for gender equality and women’s rights at work, at home and in public life. Our vision is a society in which women and girls in all their diversity are equal and truly free to fulfill their potential creating a stronger, happier, better future for us all. We’ve been advancing women’s equality since 1866 when at just 19, Millicent Fawcett collected signatures on a petition for women’s votes. She went on to lead the constitutional suffrage campaign and made this cause her lifetime’s work, securing equal voting rights 62 years later. Today we continue her legacy of fighting sexism and gender inequality through hard-hitting research. Our national campaigns shape the debate and drive change - and they are only made possible through the support of our members. Be part of our movement for equality. Join us now.

The Labour Government marks its first 100 days in power, ushering in a new era for women's rights with bold initiatives to advance equality. 1️⃣ Closing the gender pay gap Chancellor Rachel Reeves is committed to closing the gender pay gap. With measures for pay transparency and accountability, we're taking a step closer to true financial equality. 2️⃣ 50% ministerial roles held by women For the first time, half of all ministerial roles are held by women—ensuring women's voices are part of every major decision. When women lead, we all benefit. 3️⃣ Misogyny as extremism In a groundbreaking move, misogyny will be recognized as extremism. This is key to addressing violence against women and creating safer communities. 4️⃣ Buffer zones at abortion clinics Buffer zones will be introduced around abortion clinics, protecting women's right to access healthcare services free from intimidation. 5️⃣ Reducing violence against women and girls The government is boosting funding and strategies to tackle domestic abuse, reaffirming their commitment to reducing violence against women and girls. 6️⃣ Employment bill that works for women New workplace protections include enhanced parental leave, flexible working, and protections against discrimination. When women thrive, everyone benefits. The first 100 days show progress, but now we need to see the delivery of these promises. Together, we can empower women and build a more equitable society. Let's keep pushing for change. The time for action is now. #Labour100Days #GenderEquality #WomensRights

Today’s draft employment bill is a win for women. Fawcett and our members have campaigned long and hard to see government chart a new course for inclusive economic growth and to improve women’s working lives. We share this government's ambition to ensure all women can thrive at work and fully contribute to the economy.

The details of these testimonies are appalling and we pay tribute to the women who have spoken out about their experiences and bravely told their stories. These are not historical abuses. The consequences of these crimes live on in the present day and new crimes are committed daily. To stop this, we need government and societal action to change the culture and attitudes of too many men. This is the root cause which will end the misogyny which allows this to keep happening. Fawcett Society have created a free Sexual Harassment in the Workplace toolkit to help employers create workplaces where women are safe to report incidents of sexual harassment and support employers to respond appropriately. Take a look through to see how to tackle this in the workplace: https://lnkd.in/eZfCpsEN

The UK Women’s Budget Group’s latest report reveals that the poorest women in England are set to experience a devastating 21% decline in living standards—equivalent to a loss of £5,404 per year—due to the combined impact of tax and benefit changes alongside public spending cuts since 2010 projected to 2027/28.   Key findings from the “Where Do We Go From Here?” report include:   ➡️ Women are disproportionately affected: On average, women will lose £3,162 per year (9.4% of their living standards), compared to £2,395 per year for men (5.8%).   ➡️ Families with children, particularly single mothers, face significant financial strain. Single mothers are set to lose 18% of their living standards, equivalent to £10,689 per year.   ➡️ Women from Black and Asian backgrounds are facing severe losses of 13%, with Black women seeing cuts of £5,399 annually and Asian women £4,259.   ➡️ Disabled women stand to lose 11% of their living standards, while Disabled men face an 8% reduction.   We urge the government to take immediate action. Investment in social infrastructure and restoring the social security system to adequate levels is essential to protect vulnerable women from deeper financial hardship.   📑 Read the full report to explore the comprehensive findings and understand the gendered impact of 14 years of austerity: https://lnkd.in/eASpi_dz
