Good Food For Good Causes

About us

We fight food waste and food poverty by redistributing surplus good food to charities who need it. The Felix Project collects surplus fresh food from food retailers and wholesalers. We sort this in our depots and deliver it free of charge to charities and schools that provide hot meals and food parcels to people in need. This is a simple model that addresses the crucial issues of food waste and food poverty. We pass on the fresh, healthy food to charities who need it, supplying food for community kitchens, homeless hostels, food banks, refuges and charities cooking for people overcoming illness, incapacity or addiction. Our operation is simple, reliable and efficient. We have a small team of staff and more than 450 volunteers who drive our fleet of electric vans, walk or cycle to collect food from suppliers and deliver to around 1,000 charities and schools. Every hour volunteered enables 100 meals worth of food to be delivered and every £5 donated enables us to rescue £14.5 worth of food.

We are thrilled to announce that The Felix Project founder Justin Byam Shaw and our CEO, Charlotte Hill OBE have been named as part of The Standard 100 - which is a celebratory feature by the Evening Standard of the key power players across the arts, politics, media, sport, charity and much more. With Charlotte saying: "It's an absolute testament to the community that is The Felix Project right across London. Whether that's our volunteers, our food supply partners, the community organisations that receive Felix's food, that this organisation has been recognised. London is the greatest city in the world because of that community of people who come together every day to try and make London the best community it can be." With just a few days before the UK budget is released, there is a huge opportunity to ensure that we can rescue and redistribute even more fresh fruit and vegetables for those in need, while supporting the farmers and food producers that feed our nation. This is an incredibly poplar cross-bench initiative where food redirected by the scheme could provide an extra 67 MILLION meals to thousands of community organisations across the country. Please share this story and let's not allow this chance to slip away. https://lnkd.in/etx2n2qn

In the spirit of community that reflects their organisation, The Hilton Global Foundation has agreed to fund over 600,000 meals for Londoners in need. With 1 in 4 Londoners struggling to feed their families, this donation will help us support so many of our community members and neighbours as budgets are stretched to their limits everyday. But not only that, they got stuck right in, volunteering their time to help sort, pick, and deliver healthy & nutritious food (including a million carrots!!!) out to those in need. The community organisations we work with all say the same thing: the cost-of-living crisis has not gone away and there continues to be a huge increase in demand for food support. It's with partnerships and grants like this, volunteers like you, and the generous givers of our community that we will tackle hunger in our community. You can read more about the grant on our website: https://bit.ly/3A9Wuyi

I was delighted that The Felix Policy Unit was represented at No 10 Downing Street last week to hear Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Secretary of State Lisa Nandy announced the launch of a consultation around the development of a new framework for the relationship between government and civil society. A ‘national conversation’ has now begun on a new covenant, a set of principles that will describe the foundations of a meaningful, fruitful and constructive relationship – one in which government will recognise and value the strengths of our sector and one in which we can grow mutual respect and understanding between government and civil society in order to focus on the most important outcomes for the communities we serve. I was delighted, alongside Dan Byam Shaw, to have the opportunity to raise some of our key priorities such as how we can access the significant amount of surplus food at the farmgate for those most in need. At The Felix Project we are committed to a London where no good food is wasted and no Londoner goes hungry, and we've established The Felix Policy Unit to help us work with government to ensure we have a food system that enables that to happen. Working alongside other fantastic voluntary sector organisations, and in partnership with government, I'm sure we can see real progress.

What a night! Thank you to the PRWeek UK Awards for recognizing the importance and power of our joint "Where's The Food?"campaign with FareShare UK with the Best Environmental Purpose awards. The campaign is asking the government to reinstate funding to redistribute surplus food to people who need it the most, something that is especially prescient today with the cost of living crisis and the importance of our climate goals. It's with this win that we hope to keep the momentum going because the latest news published in The Grocer says the £15 million fund is currently in "limbo" and could be axed with the upcoming budget as the government looks to shore up finances. 900 charities have come together to try and prevent that from happening to what is an enormously popular scheme with the public and Parliament. The Felix Project CEO Charlotte Hill OBE says that: "This funding has the potential to unlock huge supplies of healthy and nutritious produce. It could result in millions of meals going to those that need it. We are also ready to work with the government and hope they will honour the earlier commitment and demonstrate that they are serious about reducing food waste and helping those in poverty.” Fingers crossed this award and the continued support from you will help get this initiative across the line. Working families are becoming the fastest-growing group of food bank users. With the rising costs of energy, essential items and food, 1 in 4 working Londoners struggle to feed their families. These are our neighbours, our friends, and our co-workers, and without them, there is no community. This is why we've launched our 2024 Empty Plate Emergency Appeal. With your help, we can tackle hunger in our great city. £20 will provide 50 meals during this vital time. You can donate here: https://bit.ly/3BEfRjd Our recent survey found that there are over 182,000 working families in our city who have less than £3 a day to spend on food, meaning they have no choice but to seek food assistance. You can help change this, please donate if you're able to 💚.
