About us

ABOUT THE 'AIR PILOTS' The Honourable Company of Air Pilots (HCAP) was established (as the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators, commonly known as GAPAN) in order to represent pilot and navigator interests within all areas of aviation. The majority of its members are, or have been, professional licence holders, operating aircraft in the airlines, corporate aviation and all branches of Her Majesty's armed forces. There are also many private licence holders, who are not full-time professional airmen, flying in every area of general aviation, sporting aviation and recreational flying. The particular strength of the Air Pilots is its diverse spread of members and interests in all the various areas of contemporary aviation. This, together with an entirely apolitical outlook and a constitution which forbids it from engaging in trade union activity, enables the Air Pilots to form and to promote a truly unbiased, professional and experienced view on operational aviation matters. The principal activities of the Air Pilots are centred on sponsoring and encouraging action and activities designed to ensure that aircraft are piloted and navigated safely by aviators who are highly competent, self-reliant, dependable and respected. The Air Pilots fosters the sound education and training of air pilots and air navigators from the initial training of the young pilot to the specialist training of the more mature. Through Charitable activities, education and training, technical committee work, aircrew selection, a multitude of scholarships and sponsorships, advice and recognition of the achievements of fellow aviators world-wide, the Air Pilots keeps itself at the forefront of the aviation world.

  • Aviators recognised for their bravery, outstanding contributions and achievements by the Honourable Company of Air Pilots - The 2024 Trophies and Awards announcement. Seventy years of championing aviation by the US-based Commemorative Air Force (CAF) has been recognised with an ‘Award of Honour’ from the Honourable Company of Air Pilots. Noting the CAF’s significant impact on historical, preservation, education and aviation culture, the award comes in a year when one of CAF’s flagship aircraft – a C-47 Skytrain called ‘That’s All Brother’ – was flown across the Atlantic to take part in D-Day 80th commemorative events in Normandy, France. Founded in 1957, CAF’s mission is to educate, inspire and honour through flight and living history experiences. Centred on a collection of more than 175 airworthy historic military aircraft, this makes it one of the largest and most comprehensive fleets of vintage machines in the world. CAF is funded completely by private donations and supported by an army of volunteers. A key feature of CAF’s work is connecting veterans with the public to share stories and experiences. The Air Pilots’ Trophies and Awards are among the industry’s most prestigious because recipients are selected by their peers, who have decades of experience in military and civil aviation around the world. The awards are traditionally presented at London’s Guildhall on the last Thursday of October. A full list of 2024's awards winners can be found at our website here: https://lnkd.in/e4zstzke

  • Applying to an Approved Training Organisation (ATO) or sponsored Airline programme can be a daunting task for any aspiring young pilot. The Honourable Company of Air Pilots is therefore pleased to announce a new initiative aimed at guiding prospective pilots through the process and will include time in a simulator. This will be an informal course covering: an industry outlook, a view on competencies, the basics of written applications (including CVs), numerical reasoning tests, video interviews, in-person interviews, group assessments, and a hands-on simulator profile demonstration. The event will be run by industry experts who have been involved in pilot recruitment for decades utilising techniques and tests used by major airlines. The confirmed venue and date: University of West London (Ealing) on 7th August 2024. The cost for the day is £145, which represents unparalleled value. No profits will be made from the event and any monies remaining after costs will be used to fund flying scholarships. There are only 20 places available, and reservations will be taken on a first come first served basis – there will be a waiting list available for short notice changes. To apply for the training courses please visit our website – www.airpilots.org

  • The Master Richie Piper, on behalf of the Honourable Company of Air Pilots and all our members, has written to the Officer Commanding Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight to express our deepest sympathies and sincere condolences following the death of Squadron Leader Mark Long in the recent Spitfire crash. The BBMF is not only a valued affiliate unit of the Company but an important national asset to educate, inspire and most importantly commemorate those who have gone before. We know that this tragic incident will have affected everyone at the BBMF greatly.

One of the highlights of the year is judging on the The Honourable Company Of Air Pilots Trophies & Awards Committee. This year, we're particularly keen to receive nominations for our journalism and civil flying instruction awards. Numbers of nominations for both categories have been low in recent years, which is a crying shame given the great work that goes unrecognised out there. Know someone you believe ought to be recognised for making an outstanding contribution in these areas? Then please nominate them! Instructions can be found via the link. It's a simple process and we'd love to see unsung heroes of civil flying instruction celebrated, along with those journalists who make such a difference to how our sector is covered. I just know there's more of you out there. And please do share this post with your networks to help raise awareness. The Hugh Field Memorial Award for Aviation Journalism: Awarded to an individual journalist, publication or organisation for an outstanding contribution to the promotion or public awareness of aviation in general or of any important aspect of aviation activity. The Pike Trophy: Awarded to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to civil flying instruction. #aviation #flying #journalism #flyinginstructor #awards https://lnkd.in/egKxTZDK
