𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀... "‘Human factors’ is a huge topic. It is a scientific discipline that covers many different sorts of activities depending on where you are: • Anthropometrics – how the human body fits or works with physical design. • Cognitive psychology – how we make sense of the world and ‘make choices’. • Non-Technical Skills – how we interact at a team level with the goal of creating a shared mental model of the situation. • Organisational design – how we design organisations and teams to achieve the explicit and implied goals. • Culture influences – how is culture created, from the small team all the way to national cultures and what does this mean for safety and performance." https://lnkd.in/edf2-Gjh #TheHumanDiver #Diving #JustCulture #HumanFactors #NonTechnicalSkills

Under Pressure is not just another diving manual focusing on technical skills and equipment; it's a game-changer in the world of diving. The book excavates deep into the psychological and human aspects of diving that are often overlooked yet play a critical role in diving safety and performance. Here's what makes it stand out: The book draws on experiences from over 30 global divers, recounting stories of encounters and near-misses. Such insights bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, making the learning profound and relatable. Whether you are taking your first dive or teaching future generations of divers, Lock's insights transcend all levels of experience. The content is curated to enhance the safety and performance of every diver, encouraging a thoughtful approach to underwater exploration. Lock challenges the traditional scapegoat of 'human error' in diving incidents. Instead, he urges a deeper understanding of human factors and decision-making processes under pressure. By doing so, the book fosters an environment where learning from mistakes becomes a foundation for improvement. Lock parallels insights from aviation, nuclear power, and medical fields, illustrating how these sectors' advancements in human factors and safety can be adapted to diving. This cross-industry perspective enriches the reader's understanding and applicability of the discussed concepts. Under Pressure isn't merely about surviving underwater; it's about thriving. It teaches divers to navigate the complex interplay of human factors, enhancing not only their safety but also the richness of their diving experience. Through compelling case studies, theoretical insights, and practical advice, Gareth Lock offers a compass to divers, steering them towards more mindful, informed, and ultimately safer diving adventures. NEW PODCAST EPISODE: SH113: How to help correct the biases which lead to poor decision making In this episode, we explore the concept of "pre-mortem" or prospective hindsight, a technique that helps teams identify potential reasons for failure before a project begins. Research shows that this approach increases the ability to foresee outcomes by 30%. By imagining a scenario where a project has already failed, team members can share their insights and concerns without the fear of being seen as negative, helping to prevent issues before they occur. This method is highly effective in decision-making and risk management, particularly in high-stakes environments like diving or complex team projects. https://buff.ly/3NtfCu7 #TheHumanDiver #Diving #JustCulture #HumanFactors #NonTechnicalSkills

Risk management in diving involves identifying, assessing, and mitigating potential hazards associated with underwater activities. It aims to ensure diver safety and minimize the likelihood of accidents. Key components include: 𝗣𝗿𝗲-𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: Assessing dive sites, conditions, and potential risks. This includes weather, currents, and marine life. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Ensuring divers have appropriate training and are certified for the type of diving they will undertake. 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝘀: Regularly inspecting and maintaining gear to ensure it functions correctly. 𝗕𝘂𝗱𝗱𝘆 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺: Diving with a partner to enhance safety and provide assistance if needed. 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀: Having a clear plan for emergencies, including loss of buoyancy, decompression sickness, or equipment failure. 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Staying aware of each other’s status and conditions throughout the dive. 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Reflecting on the dive to identify any issues or lessons learned for future dives. Effective risk management helps divers make informed decisions and reduces the likelihood of incidents.
