Over 30 years ago, the Kennedy Trust supported the early research and clinical trials that led to the discovery of anti-TNF therapy, a groundbreaking treatment that has improved the lives of millions of patients with musculoskeletal and inflammatory diseases across the globe. Recognising the importance of conserving this historic impact journey for prosperity, we recently undertook a 2-year project to catalogue the original research papers relating to the discovery. The Kennedy Trust Archive is now publicly available at the Wellcome Collection thanks to the work of our dedicated archivist Annie Lord. To mark the completion of this archiving project, and to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first licencing of infliximab in the US and EU, we are thrilled to announce the launch of our new booklet “Building on a breakthrough: the lasting impact of biologic therapy.” The booklet chronicles the revolutionary anti-TNF discovery story and highlights the rich history of the Kennedy Trust and our ongoing efforts to further the field of musculoskeletal and inflammatory disease research. We are working with The Kennedy Trust to #appoint their #Trustees. The Kennedy Trust’s mission is to provide sustainable funding for medical research into rheumatic and related musculoskeletal, immunological, and inflammatory diseases. The focus is on unmet needs, with the longer-term objective of achieving a meaningful impact in the development of disease treatments and preventative approaches for these debilitating conditions across the lifecourse. This strategic vision has been advanced through the support of world-class research undertaken at The Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, now based at the University of Oxford. While continuing support for The Kennedy Institute, the funding also extends nationwide across thirteen UK universities, supporting talented scientists at every stage in their careers, from doctoral students to senior research leaders. The Trust recognizes the extraordinary potential of UK science and aims to nurture and retain the very best talent to further its mission by funding the highest quality research to deliver the most meaningful results. The Kennedy Trust is now seeking to appoint up to two scientific Trustees to its Board. The new Trustees will bring a breadth of experience at a senior strategic level, including experience of working at board level and helping shape strategy and organisational direction. The Trust is particularly interested in recognised leaders in medical/life sciences research and individuals with experience in the translation and commercialisation of research, potentially from within an industry setting. This is an exciting opportunity for potential Trustees to play an instrumental role in guiding the Trust in its mission to have an impact through the development and translation of the scientific research it funds. ➡ The deadline for all applications is Monday 2nd September 2024 at 23:59 BST. How I spend days ‘off work’ - with fabulous people wanting to meaningfully integrate the patient voice into rheumatology research! Thank you Stephen Simpson, Zoe Montanaro, and Danny Sheehan from The Kennedy Trust for Rheumatology Research for convening today’s patient and public involvement focus group to listen, reflect, and begin to plan how people with lived experience can be better embedded into the work of the Trust. It is always refreshing to work with executive teams who realise they don’t have all of the answers, but are willing to take bold and transformative steps in collaboration with the real experts - patient research partners. Apologies for not grabbing a selfie earlier in the day with the whole group - we got carried away sharing ideas and planning world domination!
