A brief lesson on the financial impact of Medication Non-Adherence: The average level of medication adherence across the UK is 55% with the cost of non-adherence somewhere between £1billion and £3billion per annum. In 2019 The Medication Support Company delivered a 10 month pilot programme for Liverpool City Council to demonstrate the effect of increased medication adherence, not just on patient well-being and health outcomes, but also the impact on Health and Social Care budgets. Through our remote monitoring technology and national team of Pharmacists and Technicians, we increased medication adherence levels to an average of 97% across all patients with a broad spectrum of medical conditions and complex dose regimes. Date captured showed cost savings equating to £400,000 per 100 patients per annum, with significant increases in quality of life quotients and improved health outcomes. Some examples of how these savings were achieved: Faster hospital discharge, faster reablement process, reduced bed days, reduced hospital admissions, reduced hospital readmissions, fewer ambulance call-outs, reduced medication wastage, reduced overprescribing, lower requirement/cost of in-person care, reduced reliance on District Nurses for meds, reduced travel time/costs for carers, fewer GP appointments/phone calls, fewer police incidents/call-outs through missed doses of Psychiatric meds, fewer ambulance call-outs/hospital visits through falls resulting from missed doses of or inaccurately titrated insulin, more accurate prescribing and diagnosis from GP's for patients now with access to 100% accurate real-time meds adherence data. The Medication Support at Home Service has been saving lives and improving NHS finances ever since. We'd like to do more.
