"Care for the dying resembles nothing so much as care for the newly born. This deep, immeasurable connection is precisely what Michael Erard, a linguist and historian, most wants to explore." The Wall Street Journal reviews "Bye Bye I Love You" by Michael Erard: https://bit.ly/3QAHNJ4

About us
The MIT Press commits daily to re-imagining what a university press can be. Known for bold design and creative technology, the Press advances knowledge by publishing significant works from leading educators and researchers around the globe for the broadest possible access, impact, and audience. We seek to honor real-world complexity by featuring iconic, provocative, and transformative scholarship that crosses traditional academic and geographic boundaries. Our workplace fosters an open culture of diverse and spirited individuality that values employee initiative, supports professional growth, and encourages experimentation. The MIT Press is the only university press in the United States whose list is based in science and technology. This does not mean that science and technology are all we publish, but it does mean that we are committed to the edges and frontiers of the world—to exploring new fields and new modes of inquiry. We publish over 220 new books a year and over 30 journals. We are a major publishing presence in fields as diverse as art, architecture, economics, cognitive science, game studies and computer science to name just a few.

Television, film, online video - together, the moving image - is today's most popular information medium. Two-thirds of the world's internet traffic is video. American's get their news and information more often from screens and speakers than through any other means. MIT Open Learning's Peter B. Kaufman and GBH Archives Director Karen Cariani will explore the reach and power of the moving image - and survey how much of that power is really under our control. Kaufman's 2025 book The Moving Image: A User's Manual (The MIT Press) will be the starting point for a lively discussion of the medium's ascendance in education, politics, and knowledge disemination over the decades to come. March 26 6-8pm $15 General Admission | $5 for MIT ID Holders https://lnkd.in/e6WsaEWy

"I invite you to weave a practice of observing seasonal cycles of plants and animals into your life to contribute to science as well as soothe your soul," writes plant ecologist Theresa Crimmins. In anticipation of the first day of spring, The New York Times interviewed the author of "Phenology" on how we, and gardeners in particular, can piece together a more textured sense of spring's start from real-time clues found in our backyard: https://lnkd.in/dH2i8-4C

Thank you for helping us meet our 24-hour challenge! We are truly grateful to all who donated yesterday in support of the MIT Press Muriel Cooper Memorial Design Fund. Together, we are reinforcing Muriel Cooper’s design legacy and ensuring that the physical book continues to be an object that inspires affection and delight.

"Even the most rigorous data does not speak for itself. Data requires interpretation and storytelling. 'More data' does not inherently mean 'more knowledge,' any more than a personal library with more books necessarily makes its owner smarter or well read. The accumulation of facts is not the same as wisdom." TIME excerpts "The Weaponization of Expertise" by Jacob Hale Russell and Dennis Patterson: https://lnkd.in/eUUBscjv

During today's 24-Hour challenge, our goal is to reach 100 donations (of any size) to the Muriel Cooper Memorial Design Fund. This fund supports the production of cutting-edge publications like "Voidopolis," a hybrid digital artistic and literary project in the form of an augmented reality book made to disappear. If we meet today's micro-challenge, we also unlock a generous $10,000 gift from prominent architectural historian and author, Victoria Newhouse. Help us honor the late graphic designer Muriel Cooper’s legacy by making a gift today!: https://lnkd.in/gJ-QhRf5

Despite her landmark work on enduring projects such as "Bauhaus" (1969), and "Learning from Las Vegas" (1972), the late Muriel Cooper remains largely unknown today outside of the design world. In honor of her legacy of innovation in visual communication, our 24-Hour Challenge is raising funds to support the Cooper Memorial Design Fund: https://bit.ly/3I9Wn6g Make a gift today and support access to quality, beautifully designed publications at the MIT Press! #MIT24

We've got a handful of great books publishing today, among them “What is Life?” by leading AI researcher, Blaise Aguera y Arcas. Taking its title from theoretical physicist Erwin Schrödinger’s 1944 book of the same name, “What Is Life?” shows how self-reproduction, hence life, is inherently computational. Drawing on decades of theory and existing literature as well as recent experiments in artificial life, Agüera y Arcas demonstrates how life’s essence can be understood as computation that grows more complex over time in symbiotic relationships: https://lnkd.in/dhttM42N This small, richly illustrated volume, designed by James Goggin of Practise, is the first part of Agüera y Arcas’s larger book “What Is Intelligence?,” which further develops a computational and symbiotic perspective on intelligence, from simple organisms to brains and societies to AI: https://lnkd.in/giEVkum9. "What Is Intelligence?" will be released in September 2025 as part of the new Antikythera and MIT Press series.
