About us
VISION - to offer hope, inspiration and empowerment to children and young people living with the muscle wasting disease Muscular Dystrophy, and their families. MISSION - The Muscle Help Foundation brings together children, young people and their families, creating communities through transformational events, networks and activities. Through Muscle Dreams and by bringing beneficiaries and families together, we aim to help fulfil their potential, giving them a sense of purpose and hope for the future. SUMMARY - we are a small family charity delivering both virtual and in-person interventions called Muscle Dreams in the UK that give joy, inspiration and hope, for children and young people living with the muscle wasting disease, Muscular Dystrophy. The family unit benefits directly through social interaction with other beneficiary families and outcomes include new friendships, social connection, improved self-esteem and confidence. UNIQUE DELIVERABLE - we have a deep understanding and empathy towards both the children who receive 'Muscle Dreams', as well as the wider family unit who draw strength and inspiration from the personal involvement of Michael McGrath, the charity's founder and CEO, who as a result of the progressive nature of his specific MD variant (LGMD2A) is a permanent electric wheelchair user. ABOUT MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY (MD) - MD is the single biggest genetic killer of children in our world today. In the UK, more than 110,000 babies, children and adults are affected – sufferers are robbed of their mobility, independence and finally, for those with the most severe form, known as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), representing >96% of MHF's beneficiaries, their lives. There is currently no known treatment to delay or reverse the progression of the disease. The Muscle Help Foundation Registered Charity No. 1096716

Today marks World Mental Health Day and this year’s theme is based on workplace mental health. Being diagnosed and living with muscular dystrophy is challenging. Muscle wasting conditions impact every area of a person’s life, including their health and wellbeing. Workplace mental health programmes cannot be genetically created, as every person is different. Instead, a bespoke and person-centred approach is required to ensure that the needs of all employees can be met. Many of the young adults that we work with share that they feel isolated because of their muscular dystrophy and their struggles to secure and retain work placements and employment opportunities due to the accommodations they require. As part of National Inclusion Week, today we’d like to discuss recruitment processes and offer recruiters with four tips on how to make employment process fairer and accessible for everyone, including for those with muscular dystrophy. Tip 1: Ensure that all application forms come in a variety of different formats, for example, PDF, HTML, word documents etc, ensuring that every form can be easily navigated and read with different types of assistive technology Tip 2: Operate a no closing job application process early policy to give everyone a fair chance to apply for a position without the pressure of a potential closing early deadline having an impact on prospective employees’ energy levels. Tip 3: Provide flexible working opportunities, including hybrid and remote working to ensure disabled candidate have the confidence that they can work without their being any barriers in place. Tip 4: Ask applicants early if they require any reasonable adjustments during the interview stage and ensure they are adhered to as well as be prepared to make additional adjustments on the best to ensure you get the best out of the candidate. We hope you’ve found this useful, if you have any other suggestions then share them below.
