Changing the way Pernicious Anaemia is diagnosed and treated

About us

We are an International Charity (charity reg. no. 1147839) based in Bridgend, South Wales. The society was founded in 2005 by the current Executive Chairman, Martyn Hooper. The original aim of the society was simply to provide an easy to understand explanation of Pernicious Anaemia to newly diagnosed patients – at the time there was no such information available. Our mission: To secure a full and comprehensive review of the way in which Pernicious Anaemia is diagnosed and treated that will lead to more timely diagnoses and better treatment. We provide information, help and support to sufferers of Pernicious Anaemia (PA), including their families and friends and strive to improve current and future diagnosis and treatment of Pernicious Anaemia by: providing information to health professionals, engaging in research with the health research community, lobbying decision makers and working hard to change the way in which PA is diagnosed and treated.

  • 📢 Understanding the Difference: Pernicious Anaemia vs Autoimmune Gastritis Our members are increasingly frustrated by the recent decision in the NICE guidelines on B12 Deficiency to use the term "autoimmune gastritis" (AAG) as a catch-all to describe Pernicious Anaemia (PA). This reflects a serious misunderstanding of what Pernicious Anaemia truly is. 🩺 What is Pernicious Anaemia? Pernicious Anaemia is an autoimmune condition where the body cannot produce enough Intrinsic Factor, a protein crucial for absorbing vitamin B12. This condition has been well-studied over the last century and is not the same as Autoimmune Gastritis (AAG), which primarily involves the stomach's acid-producing cells. 🔍 The Concern By mislabeling PA as AAG, many patients could be misdiagnosed or dismissed if they don't present with gastric symptoms. While AAG often causes digestive issues due to low stomach acid, most PA patients, especially younger ones, report neurological symptoms like brain fog, cognitive difficulties, pins and needles, and extreme fatigue—long before any digestive issues arise. ⚠️ Why This Matters This misunderstanding could lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment for PA patients. The NICE guidelines should have acknowledged that Pernicious Anaemia is a distinct condition, often without initial gastric symptoms, and not just a severe B12 deficiency resulting in megaloblastic anaemia. 📄 Key Insights from Recent Research A recent paper in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences highlights advancements in understanding Autoimmune Gastritis, but the overlap in symptoms should not blur the distinction between AAG and PA. Both conditions can affect patients differently, and it is essential that healthcare providers recognise the unique nature of PA. 👉 Stay Informed! • 🌟 Debunking Common Myths About Pernicious Anaemia (PA) 🌟 There are many misconceptions surrounding Pernicious Anaemia, and it's crucial to set the record straight. Let’s look at the facts: 1️⃣ Myth: Pernicious Anaemia only affects older people 🔴 Fact: PA doesn't discriminate by age. People of all ages—even young children—can be diagnosed with this condition. 2️⃣ Myth: You can get enough B12 from your diet 🔴 Fact: PA is an autoimmune disease, meaning no matter how much B12 you consume, your body can't absorb it properly. Lifelong B12 replacement therapy, nearly always via injections, is essential. 3️⃣ Myth: Pernicious Anaemia isn’t a serious condition 🔴 Fact: Left untreated, PA can be debilitating and even life-threatening. Recovery, especially from neurological damage caused by long-term B12 deficiency, can take months or even years. 4️⃣ Myth: Once you’ve had your injection, you’re good to go 🔴 Fact: Everyone’s treatment needs are different. While some can manage on three-monthly injections, others experience symptoms long before their next dose is due. Treatment frequency should be based on how you feel, not just blood serum levels. 👉 Knowledge is power! • 🌍 A Global Gathering: The Third Vitamin B12 Symposium / CluB-12 2024 in Cambridge 🌍 This September, the historic halls of St John’s College, Cambridge, played host to a remarkable event: the third Vitamin B12 Symposium / CluB-12 2024. Over two days, on the 19th and 20th, experts, scientists, and medics from all corners of the world came together to discuss the latest research and advancements in the field of Vitamin B12. Katrina Burchell, CEO of the Pernicious Anaemia Society and Chair of the B-12 Alliance delivered a compelling talk that shed light on the ongoing collaboration between patient advocacy groups and the medical community, specifically addressing the NICE Guidelines and how these groups are working to raise awareness of B12 deficiency and its impacts. Her message was clear: unity and education are key to improving healthcare outcomes for those affected by B12 deficiency. The event delved into a range of fascinating topics. From epigenetics and cognition, to Parkinson's disease, maternal B12 deficiency, and the importance of folate fortification, the discussions were both stimulating and thought-provoking. New advancements in biomarker determinations sparked lively debates and paved the way for further exploration in these areas. The symposium fostered a vibrant atmosphere of networking and collaboration. Attendees left not only with new knowledge but also eager to continue their work in improving understanding and treatment of Vitamin B12 deficiencies.
