Our CEO Dan Conway spoke to Mark Sweney at The Guardian about AI and copyright. The government has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to set policy conditions for responsible AI in the UK. AI companies should be seeking to license content, rather than openly lobbying to change UK law to access content for free. Strong copyright laws are the answer to getting AI innovation right for UK consumers and should be defended to the hilt. Read the piece here: https://lnkd.in/esrupZ2V
The Publishers Association
Book and Periodical Publishing
Providing influence, insight and support to the UK publishing industry since 1896.
About us
The Publishers Association (the PA) represents the interests of UK publishers across consumer, education and academic publishing. Our members publish academic journals, textbooks for higher, secondary and primary education, fiction, non-fiction, children’s books and learning resources. UK publishing generates up to £7.8bn Gross Value Added (GVA) for the wider UK economy, with 57% turnover from export sales. The industry also supports up to 70,000 jobs. Our objective as an association is to provide our members with the influence, insight and services necessary to compete and prosper. Our mission is to strengthen the trading environment for UK publishers by providing a strong voice for the industry in government, in society and with other stakeholders in the UK, Europe and internationally. We provide a forum for the exchange of non-competitive information between publishers and offer support and guidance to the industry through technological and other changes.

The Publishers Association, Publishers' Licensing Services (PLS), Independent Publishers Guild, The Authors' Licensing & Collecting Society, Association of Authors’ Agents and The Society of Authors have joined with more than 10,500 creators – writers, musicians, artists, photographers, actors and more – from around the world to highlight the unlicensed training of generative AI models on creative works. This is a critical time for creators globally and in the UK we eagerly await the government’s next policy move domestically. This action from some of the people behind the books, films, music and art we love serves to shine a light on the threat to the creative community from AI companies using content without transparency, permission and fair compensation. That is why, as organisations that represent authors and the publishing sector, we have signed the statement. If you would like to sign the statement, you can do so here: https://lnkd.in/dREw7M_N

We’ve been at The Bookseller Children’s Conference today! 📚✨ This morning our Director of Policy & Public Affairs, Caroline Cummins, delivered a keynote and highlighted the incredible work that publishers are already doing to address the reading for pleasure crisis. She also outlined the need for the book sector to come together with government to get children reading. This afternoon we took part in a roundtable discussing solutions to the reading for enjoyment crisis. The fascinating panel highlighted protected story time in school, every primary school having a library and reading aloud to children as ways of combatting the crisis in reading for enjoyment. #KidsConf
