Philanthropic Fundraising Services

The world’s leading charitable research body dedicated to rewriting the future of disability

About us

We use human-centred AI and cutting-edge technology to radically reimagine the future for people with extreme disability. The Foundation was born from the relentless ambition and “incurable optimism” of Dr. Peter Scott-Morgan, the visionary robotics scientist who reimagined his own future with MND after diagnosis in 2017. Supported by the steadfast love of his husband Francis and devoted family, Peter underwent elective surgery to prolong his life and embrace a technology-driven transformation. Peter became known worldwide as the “world’s first human cyborg,” the living embodiment of a brighter future and a beacon for countless others facing extreme disability. Peter passed in June 2022 but remained fantastically driven through his final moments. The Foundation carries on his work to build a future where everyone—regardless of condition or physical limitations—can thrive. In our hearts, we are Rebels fighting to rewrite the future for those who need it most. We have assembled an unprecedented coalition of world-class expertise gathered from some of the largest and most influential corporations as well as some of the top specialist firms on the planet, all donating their time and resources to work as one to achieve The Foundation’s hugely ambitious research goals. And we are carefully recruiting more. Together, we mean to change everything... From breakthrough technology solutions to legislative campaigns, we are building a better future for everyone. Lenovo leaders were on a roll last week discussing all things #AI on the Tech Talks Daily #podcast! From the hot topics of bias and accessibility in GenAI, to how we equip organizations for a #hybrid world, to ensuring these solutions generate the ROI they promise -- my colleagues Ada, Qianying, Vladimir, and I sat down with Neil C. Hughes to trade notes and record our findings. It's my second time on the podcast this year, so I shared the progress we are making on #AIforGood with The Scott-Morgan Foundation and others on Alzheimer's Intelligence 🧠 as well as the cutting edge innovation we are implementing to transform the #Lenovo customer experience. I think back to the mobile revolution, when everything was about the "killer app". Now with AI and #GenAI, it's all about the "killer use case", and we've already seen a few emerge with double-digit impacts to get that ROI. In the GenAI Contact Center, we are using the #technology to transform customer care. This has multiple implementation points: 🧑💼 We might use AI to help the human agent to do their work more effectively and provide the end customer a better interaction. 📲 We might use AI to automate or replace an interaction to provide a better self-service experience, getting an end customer to resolution more quickly without bringing in a human. 🧮 We are also using AI to improve the backbone of #data that powers this entire experience so we can better understand product definitions, IT tickets, and troubleshooting conversations. That is just one example we've identified where GenAI has delivered 10-15% gains in productivity! To learn more, tune into one of the podcast episodes in the link below. 👇

Why AI Matters to All of Us I can't help but reflect on the incredible journey - from managing hedge funds to journalism, advising and running startups to leading The Scott-Morgan Foundation. Each step has given me a unique lens through which to view the rapidly evolving world of AI. I urge you to read Dario Amodei's thought-provoking essay, "Machines of Loving Grace," which struck a chord. I want to share why it matters to ALL of us. The pace of progress we're experiencing is gargantuan. As someone who's witnessed the breakneck speed of financial markets and startup innovation, this resonates deeply. At The Scott-Morgan Foundation, the AI-powered assistive technologies we're developing today were the stuff of science fiction a few years ago. Journalism teaches the importance of a balanced perspective. Amodei's essay embodies this, painting an optimistic future while acknowledging the risks. This approach is crucial as we navigate the AI revolution. At SMF, we're constantly walking a tightrope - pushing the boundaries of what's possible while ensuring innovations are safe and ethical. Amodei outlines how AI could address global challenges. This isn't just theory - we're seeing it happen. Our work with #ALS patients is just one example of how AI can restore voice, identity, and dignity. Despite all the talk of machines, AI development is profoundly human at its core. My experiences across various sectors have shown me that diverse teams and inclusive design are key to creating truly transformative solutions. This is why we prioritize working with partners who share this human-centric approach. AI will impact your life. Stay informed, advocate for ethical and inclusive AI, and support initiatives that use AI for societal good. Designing for the most vulnerable means designing for ALL. By focusing on solutions for people with severe #disabilities like #ALS, we're pushing the boundaries of what's possible in AI and assistive tech. As we face a future where over 500 million people worldwide grapple with muscular or neurological conditions, our work becomes not just important but imperative. At The Scott-Morgan Foundation, we're committed to harnessing AI's potential to improve lives. But we can't do it alone. It will take a collective effort to ensure that the future Amodei envisions - one where AI dramatically enhances human capabilities and quality of life - becomes a reality for everyone, not just a privileged few. Esther Duran, our Director of Design and Innovation, says: "Human-centric design in AI isn't just about user-friendliness; it's about preserving what makes us human. We're designing solutions that honor individual identity and empower self-expression, ensuring AI serves humanity." Our AAC "concept car" system utilizes advanced AI for user intent prediction, seamless smart home integration, personalized avatars with emotive speech synthesis, real-time language translation, and adaptive capabilities. This vision guides our R&D efforts in collaboration with partners like Lenovo and AI industry leaders. Driven by "privilege for purpose," we: Leverage cutting-edge technology and partnerships Create innovations that become more affordable over time Inspire the AAC industry to think bigger and move faster Ensure high-end prototypes serve the greater good Esther Duran, Design & Innovation Director at the Scott-Morgan Foundation, emphasizes the broader impact: "Our AAC 'concept car' approach is more than just showcasing futuristic ideas; it's about accelerating the development of life-changing technologies. By leveraging cutting-edge resources and partnerships, we're pushing the boundaries of what's possible in AAC and paving the way for innovations that will eventually benefit users across the spectrum of abilities. This is the essence of our 'privilege for purpose' philosophy – using our position to drive meaningful change and true digital inclusion." Our approach catalyzes change, attracts investment to AAC technology, empowers users through involvement in design and testing, and challenges the notion that assistive technology must lag behind mainstream tech. By dreaming big and leveraging privilege for purpose, we're driving a revolution in AAC technology. Follow us at Lenovo Tech World as we unveil our latest innovations and build the future of AAC. 🤝 Collaborative Innovation: Driving Inclusive AI in Assistive Technology At The Scott-Morgan Foundation, we believe true innovation in AI-powered assistive technology comes through collaboration. We're not just developing technology; we're fostering a global ecosystem to ensure AI serves everyone, regardless of ability or background. 🧠 Addressing Bias: A Collective Effort Our Chief Engineer, Eric Kern, highlights a crucial challenge: "The Generative portion of a RAG model leverages a pre-trained LLM such as Llama3 that was trained using data from the internet. This data has inherent bias and risk that reflects the internet at the time of training. Even if the private data being used in the RAG model has no bias, the LLM will still need to generate the response in a human native language such as English." Recognizing this, we're working closely with Eric and other engineers to proactively address bias in our models. It's not just about acknowledging the issue – it's about taking concrete steps to mitigate it. 🌐 Partnering for Progress Our collaboration with Lenovo exemplifies our commitment to inclusive AI. Lenovo is not just providing technology; they're actively addressing bias within their own AI development processes. This partnership allows us to leverage industry-leading expertise while pushing the boundaries of inclusive design. As a member of Zero Project's Equitable AI Alliance advisory board, I'm proud to bring our insights to a global stage. This alliance, connecting experts from 180 countries, is crucial in: Championing disability inclusion in AI at leading conferences worldwide Steering critical decisions in AI development Fostering cross-sectoral collaboration between public services, businesses, and civil society Our work with the Alliance ensures that the voices and needs of people with disabilities are at the forefront of AI innovation. 🚀 Why This Matters By bringing together diverse perspectives – from engineers and tech giants to disability advocates and policymakers – we're not just creating better assistive technology. We're shaping an AI landscape that's inherently more inclusive, innovative, and impactful for all. At The Scott-Morgan Foundation, we believe that the future of AI must be built on a foundation of diversity and inclusion. Join us on this collaborative journey to ensure that AI truly serves everyone. I first saw Brian Wallach and Sandra Abrevaya's "For Love & Life: No Ordinary Campaign" at its SXSW premiere. Recently, I had the privilege of attending the NYC premiere and watching it for the second time. This powerful film showcases their journey with ALS and the remarkable community they've built along the way. Seeing the movie again evoked a fresh wave of emotions within me. For anyone working in the #ALS community, there's a profound sorrow that comes with witnessing someone's body break down piece by piece and losing friends along the way. Juxtaposed with that sadness, however, is an overwhelming sense of gratitude for being surrounded by people who are full of life, living in the present moment, and truly embodying what it means to live. Moreover, there's a lesson in gratitude. Life is such a gift, made profoundly richer by living with purpose. What a beautiful love story between Brian and Sandra and between them and the ALS community. Thank you, Brian and Sandra, for your tireless efforts in securing funding for research and creating a platform for the ALS community to be seen and heard. Your work has brought new energy to the fight against this devastating disease. If you haven't seen "For Love & Life: No Ordinary Campaign," I highly recommend watching it on Amazon Prime Video. This movie will move you and remind you to live life to the fullest. #ALS #MND

I recently had the privilege of speaking on ElevenLabs' panel about #accessibility, expertly moderated by Dalton Pakkala alongside Eric Kern from Lenovo and Bridging Voices. We discussed our groundbreaking collaborative project that harnesses the power of #AI to revolutionize assistive technologies for individuals living with disabilities. In this video, we delve into how the convergence of AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) is set to disrupt the market in unprecedented ways, making once-unaffordable solutions both accessible and scalable. By uniting multiple companies leveraging AI for good, we are working towards providing a la carte solutions catering to the diverse needs of people with disabilities. Our ultimate goal is to create a blueprint for individuals to thrive. A key aspect of this initiative is building a bespoke Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) solution with a basic, free version to fill a significant gap in the market. This will enable companies like IRISBOND to create more robust AAC solutions to work with their eye-tracking, empowering users with enhanced communication capabilities. We recognize the importance of collaborating with experts in the field. Our product designer, Esther Duran, emphasizes the significance of not designing in a vacuum with engineers. Instead, she's actively involving end-users and working with john costello and his team at The Jay S. Fishman ALS Augmentative Communication Program at Boston Children's Hospital. Our team at The Scott-Morgan Foundation is incredibly excited about the potential impact of this collaboration and the role AI will play in making assistive technologies more accessible and empowering. Together, we are taking significant strides towards a future where individuals with disabilities can fully participate in all aspects of life.
