Five syllable words, acronyms, and weird sayings, don't have the desired effect. In fact, they often have the opposite effect. They don't make us look smart. They often make us look insecure. If we can't explain it in language that a 12 year could understand, then chances are we don't understand the subject well enough. Here are some phrases that are far too overused in the corporate world (I confess to being guilty of using some of these far too frequently). 🤫 “Circle back” 🤫“Touch base” 🤫“Cadence” 🤫“Let’s take this offline and workshop it a bit” 🤫“Close the loop” 🤫“Innovative” (because it’s beginning to lose all meaning) 🤫“Cross-functional thought partners” 🤫“Can we socialize this idea?” 🤫“Virtual coffee” 🤫“Team engagement meetings” 🤫“Fast-paced” 🤫“Collaborative environment” 🤫“Run it up the flagpole” 🤫“We’re a family” 🤫“We’re giving you back 10 minutes” (when a meeting ends early) 🤫“I have an ask” 🤫“Holistic approach” 🤫“Please revert” (“To what?” Redditor Tactical_Laser_Bream asked. “An ape? A primordial amoeba?”) 🤫People who just write “hi/hello” on Teams and wait for a response 🤫When a meeting of the whole department is called a “town hall” 🤫“Let’s unpack that” 🤫Saying “ideation” when you mean “coming up with some ideas” 🤫“Boil the ocean” 🤫“Granular approach” 🤫“Supercharge” 🤫“Please do the needful” 🤫“Learnings” 🤫“Hope this email finds you well” 🤫“Ping me that document” 🤫To “action” something 🤫“We need all hands on deck” 🤫“Thought-leader” 🤫“War room” 🤫“Ceremonies” (referring to meetings) 🤫“Riff,” “riffing” 🤫Calling people “resources” 🤫“Out of pocket” 🤫“Let’s touch base” 🤫“Deep dive” 🤫“Huddle” 🤫“Careabouts” (As in “What are your careabouts?”) 🤫“Ninja,” “wizard,” or “rockstar” in a job posting 🤫“Blue sky thinking” 🤫“The art of the possible” 🤫“Let me double-click on that statement” 🤫“Product owner” 🤫“Drinking from a firehose” 🤫“Unicorn” 🤫“We need to impact this” 🤫“At the end of the day" (From: "The 50 Most Annoying Corporate Jargon Words and Phrases" by Suzanne Lucas) If you liked this, please follow me Simon Crawford Welch, Ph.D. Repost this ♻️ to share it with your network. “In the meantime…. stay curious, my friends.” #PersonalDevelopment
