We recently hosted our 2024 Studio Innovation Fund Evaluation Evening, where three resident-centred collaborations—The Un-Truths (Jack Stoddart and Common Wealth Theatre), Waytego (James Levelle and Joseph Lavington), and A Matter of Opportunity (Nick James & Jenny Ford)—showcased creative tech solutions to pressing social issues. The event blended insightful discussions with playful elements—costumes, crafts, and incredible food—proving that evaluation can be both rigorous and fun! 🌟 Curious about the impactful projects and our unique approach to evaluation? Check out the full blog for key takeaways and future plans: https://lnkd.in/eCz-n22K We’d like to thank Bath Community Kitchen for providing incredible food, Newark Works (TCNUK) for a beautiful space to host the event, Nick Spratling for capturing the evening perfectly through stunning photography, and Matthew Emeny for the funky costumes. --   The Studio Innovation Fund is supported by Bath Spa University's strategic Centre for Cultural and Creative Industries and utilises a UK Research and Innovation Policy Support Fund grant from Research England to grow new interdisciplinary programmes that help solve pressing public policy challenges. The fund has now supported a total of 21 creative tech projects that address social causes by distributing £100K of funding. #CreativeTech #SocialImpact #Evaluation #StudioInnovationFund #TheStudioinBath

Welcome to our new resident, Tom Kimber, founder of eJourno, a web platform dedicated to fighting fake news! 🎉 News as we know it is changing. Most news is now not consumed through the TV or newspapers but online, and for young people that’s mostly through social media. And, right now, there is more fake news and misinformation content being created and shared than ever before, and it’s causing real damage to our society. We need to be protected from this. eJourno, its users, academics and our AI models, will collaboratively rate the news and content creators of the entire internet. A big challenge that once underway allows us to easily differentiate between, fact-based journalism, analysis, opinion, and misinformation. And importantly, gives social media platforms a path to protecting its users. At the studio, Tom is developing the platform and his team, ready for launch at the end of 2024. Outside of The Studio, you will find Tom on his bike, up a mountain, or cooking amazing food with his wife. #TheStudioInBath #NewResident #Founder #Journalism #PostTruth #ArtificialIntelligence

The votes are in – what might a Labour government mean for our cultural and creative industries? Whether you voted for them or not, change is in the air. Our new government has the potential to impact everything from creative funding to AI development over the next five years. Focus on the Creative Industries hasn’t been central to most party manifestos. Nevertheless, there are significant pledges to consider. Labour’s plan for Arts, Culture, and the Creative Industries emphasises economic growth, job creation, and broadening access to arts and culture. Key Initiatives Include: • Creative Skills: Reform the Apprenticeships Levy, and introduce a flexible Growth and Skills Levy, with Skills England ensuring qualifications provide value for money. • Creative Businesses: Balance AI innovation with creator protection, ensure the self-employed and small businesses are paid on time, and make it easier for UK artists to go on tour. • Creative Institutions: Support the BBC and public service broadcasters, set 10 year budgets for key R&D institutions, review Arts Council England, and support university spinouts. • Access to the Arts: Commission a curriculum review and establish a National Music Education Network. There are strengths to Labour’s promise, such as a renewed focus on creative subjects in schools and improved access to capital for small businesses. However, it remains to be seen if these initiatives offer the sustainable growth, and increase in diversity needed for the UK’s creative sector to reach it’s full potential (Creative UK Manifesto). "This moment of change for the UK is an opportunity to maximise our growth and resilience if driven by political imagination and ingenuity. We face huge challenges that we need creativity to overcome, since innovation and collaboration are critical to prosperity, health and our place in the world. It’s artists and creatives who imagine a better future for us all.” - Caroline Norbury, Chief Executive of Creative UK  At The Studio, we’re committed to helping residents navigate these changes and take advantage of new funding opportunities. You can also sign up to our newsletter to follow the latest updates on micro-businesses and the world of creative technology: https://lnkd.in/g6kiStiU Read more about Labour’s plan here: https://lnkd.in/gHT-sk9Y #LabourGovernment #ElectionResults #Arts #Culture #CreativeIndustry #CreativeBusiness #Funding #TheStudioInBath #CreativeUK

And we’re back - Thank you Glastonbury Festival 2024! 🎉 We had the privilege of collaborating with Dr. Coral Manton (Senior Lecturer in Creative Computing at Bath Spa University School of Design) and Naomi Smyth (The Studio in Bath and MyWorld - Bristol Bath) to bring creative technology to Glastonbury Festival. This aligns with our mission to foster community engagement through fully-subsidised public workshops, immersive technology access, and partnerships with BSU researchers. It wasn’t the first visit for festival-goers Dr. Coral Manton and Naomi Smyth, who previously partnered with Glastonbury's Shangri-La to deliver cutting-edge installations that blend technology, performance, and storytelling. These installations evolve in response to societal questions, integrating artificial intelligence, virtual reality, physical computing, and creative coding. Offering playful encounters that encourage critical thinking, they create a dynamic environment that attracts a broad audience, and contributes to growth and innovation in the creative sector. Not to mention, Glastonbury Festival is estimated to generate over £100 million for the South West’s economy each time it is staged (UK Music). Naturally, taking this equipment to the festival wasn't easy, especially with limited internet access, but our team of party nerds were well-prepared. Find out more about this years project and our teams tips for managing festival tech on our website https://buff.ly/3RTYJv6 #Glastonbury #TheStudio #GlastonburyFestival2020 #StudioGlasto2024 #CreativeTechnology #FestivalTech Bath Spa University The Studio in Bath

Hello from Glastonbury! 👋 The party nerds are officially on site and helping to set up immersive installations in the Shangri La field. For those of you who haven’t been to Glastonbury, Shangri La is the southeast corner of the festival, well-known for celebrating thought-provoking work and underrepresented arts and culture. The site opened yesterday and welcomed attendees into a playful and interactive world of performance, art, and storytelling. Following on from last year’s theme, ‘Everything Must Go,’ the work invites attendees to explore alternative currencies, exchanges, and values – all while having a good giggle of course! For those who can’t join us, check out last year’s video and see if you can spot our creative technologist Naomi Smyth https://lnkd.in/gqg597vk A big thank you to our partners, MyWorld - Bristol Bath, Bath Spa University, and Bath School of Design for making this possible. We’re off to Glastonbury 2024! 🎉 What has creative technology got to do with Glastonbury Festival? Will it rain? Will anyone find the secret piano bar? We’re sending four members of The Studio’s team to find out! The Creative Computing team based in Bath School of Design, The Studio and MyWorld - Bristol Bath will have a presence at Glastonbury this year- in the late-night creative madness of the Shangri La field! Our Creative Technologist Naomi Smyth has been creating performance installations at Shangri La since 2010. In 2022 when the festival relaunched after COVID-19, Naomi collaborated with the Creative Computing team's Dave Webb and Sam Sturtivant led by Dr Coral Manton, to create a VR venue in a shipping container. This year they're back together, also working with Rachel Pownall, MyWorld's Innovation manager, Technical Demonstrator Sam Kaighin, The Studio's creative producer Nik Rawlings and Marketing Consultant Nigel Fryatt. The whole team has long experience in live performance as well as creative tech, so we have a smashing team of Party Nerds! We can’t reveal the specifics of what we’re going to be getting up to until tomorrow, so keep an eye on our socials to find out! The Studio, Bath School of Design and MyWorld BSU have contributed in-kind in the form of staff time, production space and equipment. Pictures and videos to follow after the festival. Wish us luck! 🍀 #Glastonbury #Festival2024 #CreativeTechnology #TheStudioInBath #MyWorld #BathSpaUniversity #CreativeTech #Glastonbury2024 GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL EVENTS LIMITED Bath Spa University
