  • We were really delighted that our Pam Williams partnered with Niki Vardy of Hays to deliver a workshop yesterday on "Reimagining the Future of Work: Shaping Flexible Working for All". With the publication of the Employment Rights Bill on 10 October, this could not have come at a better time given the proposal for a Day 1 right to request flexible working. In this new Bill, there is also a proposal for employees to have the right to switch off. During our workshop we explored the impact of this on some of the innovative flexible working ideas generated and possible solutions. Pam felt privileged to work with such a diverse and talented group of senior HR professionals. She is grateful to everyone who enthusiastically participated in the workshop by sharing their own insights, experiences and brilliant ideas. #NewWaysOfWorking #ReturnToWork #WomenInBusiness #futureofwork

Executive & Career Coach. Supporting people in mid-career and beyond to navigate the ups and downs of work/life to fulfil their aspirations. HR Leadership. Learning & Organisational Development.

REIMAGINING THE FUTURE OF WORK: SHAPING FLEXIBLE WORKING FOR ALL Yesterday, Niki Vardy and I facilitated a workshop for senior HR professionals, where we explored how to Reimagine the Future of Work with a focus on flexible working and career returners. The interactive session was thought-provoking and generated great ideas for making work more inclusive and adaptable to today's challenges. Here’s a quick recap of the key takeaways:  *Career Returners & the Sandwich Generation We focused on the needs of midlife individuals, especially women, who juggle work with caring responsibilities. This "sandwich generation" faces unique challenges when trying to stay in or return to work. We discussed how organisations can better support these workers.  *Challenges of Career Breaks People take career breaks for many reasons including maternity, health, redundancy or caregiving.  We examined the perceived challenges from both the employees’ and employers’ perspectives and explored how to better support those re-entering the workforce, particularly midcareer women.  *The Outdated 9-to-5 Schedule I traced the origins of the traditional 9-5 workday rooted in Ford’s mass production model and questioned its relevance in today’s knowledge economy. With modern workers expected to manage their own time, make decisions and collaborate globally, we asked: Why do organisations still cling to rigid schedules when technology allows for flexibility?  *Beyond Part-Time: Personalised Flexible Working We redefined what flexible working means, looking beyond part-time or hybrid arrangements. I introduced the idea of “personalised flexible working,” tailored to individual needs. A highlight of the session was an activity where groups acted as superheroes (capes included!), to find creative solutions to help employees with unique challenges (e.g. caring responsibilities or health issues) to stay in or return to work.  *Returnships & Building Confidence Getting back to work after a career break can be daunting, especially for those who’ve lost confidence. We explored Returnships as a way to ease the transition back into the workplace and urged HR leaders to implement similar programmes to support returners.  *Strategic Benefits Finally, we looked at the larger benefits of bringing more midcareer women back into the workforce by filling vacancies, boosting the economy and doing the right thing! Supporting these women not only makes business sense but also drives greater inclusivity and empathy in the workplace. It was a fantastic session full of insights. As someone passionate about reshaping work for the future, I believe we need to embrace flexibility, compassion, and creativity in our approach. If your organisation is looking to explore flexible working or Returnships, I’d love to connect. Let’s reimagine the future of work together! #flexibleworking #midcareer #futureofwork #coaching

  • 🍁 Embracing the Season of Change: A Message for Career Returners and Businesses The wonderful changing colours of Autumn is a reminder that there is beauty in transformational change! For many professionals, especially women, this season of change mirrors their journey back to the workforce after a career break. Whether due to childcare, eldercare, personal commitments, redundancy or a period of self-reflection, returning to work is not just a transition; it’s a reinvention. For returners, this path back is filled with hope, but also uncertainty: * Has the workplace evolved beyond my skill set? * How do I explain my career break? * Will I find a role that offers the flexibility I need to balance work and personal commitments? These are real concerns, especially for those in the "sandwich generation," often juggling the responsibilities of raising children and caring for elderly parents. But there’s another side to this story that organisations must pay attention to: the opportunity they are missing by overlooking this highly skilled, resilient, and motivated talent pool. 🍁  What businesses need to understand: * FLEXIBLE WORKING options are no longer "nice-to-haves." They are essential for attracting returners. You need to think much wider, too, than just remote working and hybrid options. * RETURNSHIPS provide structured opportunities for individuals to refresh their skills, regain confidence, and re-enter the workforce with purpose. * TRAINING is key. Returners want to close any skills gaps and feel prepared to make meaningful contributions. Investing in their growth reaps long-term rewards for the business. By addressing these needs, businesses don’t just fill vacancies - they gain seasoned professionals with invaluable life experience, leadership potential, and fresh perspectives. Ignoring this group means missing out on exceptional talent. As an Executive Coach and Trainer, I’m passionate about bridging the gap between businesses and returners. I work closely with both to: * Raise awareness of the unique challenges returners face. * Design practical solutions, such as returnships and flexible working policies, to help them reintegrate successfully. * Empower returners to regain their confidence, update their skills, and balance personal and professional life. If you’re a business leader, it’s time to reconsider your approach to hiring. Embracing returners helps you build an inclusive, diverse, and highly skilled workforce. And if you’re someone navigating your own autumn season of change, know that your experience is your strength, and with the right support, you’ll thrive once again. Let’s connect and explore how we can make this return-to-work journey smoother for you or your organisation. #CareerReturners #WomenInLeadership #CareerBreak #Returnships #FlexibleWorking #HybridWorking #Coaching #Training #SkillsDevelopment #DiversityAndInclusion

  • What a Fox Taught Me about Leadership: Balancing Support and Independence Today, I saw a fox on a neighbour’s driveway, waiting for breakfast at 10 a.m. then returning at 4 p.m. for supper - like clockwork. This behaviour, built on consistency and expectation, mirrors workplace dynamics. As leaders, we aim to support our teams and provide resources. Like the fox, employees develop expectations of us. While leadership involves creating conditions for success, over-supporting can lead to reliance, stifling growth and innovation. Effective leaders balance support and empowerment. Delegation is key, allowing team members to learn, take responsibility, and act independently. It’s about creating an environment where teams feel empowered to solve problems without constant oversight or feeling micromanaged. In today’s volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world, leaders must provide a framework for teams to thrive. This means guiding, setting clear expectations, and offering growth opportunities, not spoon-feeding. Many new managers lack formal training, leading without foundational skills in people management, delegation, or fostering independence. With my extensive background as an Executive Coach, Senior HR Leader and L&OD specialist, I help leaders find the balance between support and independence. My experience shows that with the right tools, leaders can develop high-performing, self-sufficient teams. Whether you’re a new manager seeking direction or a seasoned leader refining your approach, I can help you build the skills needed to succeed in this dynamic environment. If this resonates with you, let’s connect. I’m always happy to discuss leadership development solutions tailored to your unique context. #LeadershipDevelopment #ExecutiveCoaching #TeamLeadership #Empowerment #HRLeadership

  • Embrace the Transformative Power of the Season in Your Career As we welcome this new season, we find ourselves in a time of transformation, reflection, and opportunity. Just as nature adapts and changes, we too evolve in our personal and professional lives. For many people in mid-career, the thought of change can be daunting. Whether it’s seeking advancement, returning to the workforce, or taking on a new leadership challenge, the journey can feel overwhelming. Yet, with the right mindset and support, these transitions can be exciting and fulfilling. 1. Change as a Catalyst for Growth: Change, whether planned or unexpected, can spark new ideas and pathways. As a coach, I encourage viewing change as a growth catalyst rather than a barrier. Embrace the discomfort and see where it leads. It could open doors to new skills, perspectives, and opportunities. 2. The Importance of Reflection: This season is the perfect time to reflect on your journey. Celebrate your achievements and consider the obstacles you’ve overcome. What have you learned? How can those lessons shape your next steps? Reflection clarifies your path and strengthens your resolve. 3. Building Resilience: In leadership, resilience is essential. Navigating career complexities requires inspiring resilience in others. My work focuses on helping leaders and individuals cultivate this trait, empowering them to guide their teams through change with confidence and grace. 4. Connect and Collaborate: Remember the power of community. Engage with others on similar journeys. Share experiences, seek advice, and celebrate successes. • Thriving in Mid-Career and Midlife: Unlocking the Power of Possibility Navigating mid-career and midlife as a woman brings unique challenges, but also incredible opportunities. After taking a career break to care for my family, I returned to the workforce with renewed passion and have built a career I never imagined possible. Now, I help other women in organisations do the same—on their terms. Midlife: A Time for Growth, Not Setbacks For many women, midlife can feel like a time of transition. Whether balancing career goals with personal responsibilities or returning to work after a break, this is a stage for growth, not setbacks. With the right support, you can leverage your experience and resilience to craft a fulfilling life and career. Defining Success on Your Own Terms Success doesn’t follow a one-size-fits-all model. Having worked in senior HR roles, I’ve seen firsthand the immense value women bring to the table. Whether you're looking to rise in leadership, pivot careers, or re-enter the workforce, it’s crucial to align your goals with your unique strengths and life stage. Lifelong Learning: The Key to Growth Returning to education in midlife transformed my perspective and opened doors I hadn’t expected. Continuous learning, whether through new certifications or leadership development, is essential in today’s evolving professional landscape. Upskilling can be a game-changer, and there are many resources available, including free courses and company sponsorships. Embracing Transitions Midlife transitions are an opportunity to redefine your career. The skills and experiences you’ve gained, whether at home or in the workplace, are valuable assets. For example, my voluntary work during my career break led to my first part-time role upon re-entry. Let’s Connect! As an executive coach, trainer, speaker, and facilitator, I’m passionate about helping women navigate mid-career and midlife transitions. Through personalised coaching and workshops, I provide tools to help you build the career and life you truly want. • Embracing the Unexpected: 5 Lessons from Pam’s Journey with a Broken Arm! Two weeks ago, life threw me an unexpected curveball—I seriously broke my arm. As someone who is right-handed, this has been a significant challenge. But instead of seeing it as a setback, I’ve chosen to view it as an opportunity for growth and learning. Here are five key takeaways from my experience so far that I hope can help others navigate unexpected changes: 1. Adaptability is a Superpower When life changes in an instant, our ability to adapt becomes crucial. I've had to learn to rely on my left hand for tasks that my right hand would typically handle (e.g. a great chance to practice left-handed writing). This experience has reminded me that flexibility and the willingness to adjust are key not only in personal challenges but also in our professional lives. It is also helpful to take stock of what you can do with your current resources, what things are within your control and your choices on how to respond to the circumstances. 2. The Power of Asking for Help As an executive and career coach, I often emphasize the importance of collaboration. This injury has reinforced that lesson in a very personal way. I've had to reach out for help—something that doesn’t always come naturally to me. But accepting support has allowed me to keep moving forward. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it; it’s a sign of strength, not weakness. 3. Patience is a Virtue In our fast-paced world, patience can feel like a luxury we can't afford. This injury has taught me that sometimes, slowing down is necessary. Healing takes time, whether it’s physical, emotional, or professional. Being patient with ourselves and the process can lead to better outcomes in the long run. 4. Creativity Thrives in Constraints With my dominant arm out of commission, I’ve had to get creative. Whether it's finding new ways to do everyday tasks or approaching problems from a different angle, this experience has reminded me that constraints can spark innovation. In our careers, limitations often force us to think outside the box, leading to unexpected solutions. 5. Rest is Productive In a culture that often glorifies busyness, it's easy to forget the importance of rest. My injury has forced me to slow down and prioritize recovery, and in doing so, I've gained a renewed understanding of the value of rest. Taking time to recharge isn’t just beneficial; it’s essential for long-term success. This unexpected journey has been a powerful reminder that challenges can be opportunities in disguise. As a coach, I’m excited to bring these insights into my work with clients, helping them navigate their own unexpected changes with resilience and creativity.

  • “We’re Letting You Go!” The brutality and lack of compassion of ‘at will’ employment practice from across the Pond still has the capacity to surprise me! Even long-serving, loyal employees can be given minutes notice that their role is immediately being made redundant and handed their ‘Pink Slip’. This is accompanied by that familiar but dreaded phrase we so often hear in movies or on TV of, “we’re letting you go”, being uttered.  If ever there was a need for compassionate leadership, kindness and caring, it surely has to be at that time when people’s lives are up ended and thrown into turmoil. People at that mid to later career stage can be especially adversely affected. Losing a job unexpectedly is challenging wherever you are based and at any life stage. As an Executive and Career Coach, I've seen numerous professionals go through this difficult transition following redundancy so I want to offer some guidance and encouragement to those who may be facing this situation. 🔅 Acknowledge your emotions: It's natural to feel a range of emotions, especially if the job loss is sudden. Allow yourself some time to process what's happened. It's okay to feel upset, hurt, frustrated, afraid, angry, resentful or uncertain about the future. 🔅 Avoid isolation: Try to talk to trusted friends, family, or associates for support and encouragement. 🔅 Assess your financial situation: Review your finances, create a budget, and check for any redundancy pay or unemployment benefits. Look into personal income protection policies if you have them. 🔅Update your CV and LinkedIn profile: Highlight your achievements and skills. A strong online presence can attract potential employers. 🔅 Use your network: Reach out to former colleagues and connections. Networking can help you access the 'hidden' job market. 🔅 Job search: Register with recruiters, job boards, LinkedIn and set up job alerts. Remember to keep a record of job applications. 🔅 Keep your learning fresh: Learn new skills or certifications to stay competitive. Look out for free courses or invest in alternative learning options. 🔅 Remember our 3 Ps to stay Positive, Proactive, and Persistent: Set daily goals for your job search and balance this with exercise or fun things to maintain your wellbeing and mental health. 🔅 Seek professional support: Use outplacement support if available, or consider using a Career Coach and CV writer. 🔅 Explore temporary roles: Consider alternative work to bridge the gap. Volunteering can also help maintain a sense of purpose. Having been made redundant twice, I reminded myself that job loss does not define me or my worth. Use redundancy as a path towards new opportunities that align with your values, interests and aspirations. Sometimes, redundancy can be the springboard to something better.

  • Reconnecting Over Career Conversations Last week, I had pleasure of reconnecting with my former ‘right-hand’ woman and great friend, Akua Richardson. Our meet-up was long overdue as we had not seen each other in person since my Daughter died 4 years ago. We chose to meet in the beautiful setting of Pennyhill Park for afternoon tea. As we sat down to review our respective career journeys and to discuss our future plans, I was struck by a poignant memory. The very chair I was sitting in brought me back to a pivotal moment in my career—the interview with the head-hunter that landed me my dream job had taken place right there. Securing that position was a turning point for me, not just because it fulfilled a long-held aspiration to become an HR Director, but also because it allowed me to build the best, most talented team I had ever had the privilege to work with -the Dream Team. Among the excellent colleagues I had the honour of hiring into that team was my very accomplished afternoon tea companion. Akua’s contribution was invaluable, and together, we navigated numerous challenges and celebrated our hard won successes. Reflecting on our journey, I am reminded of the importance of nurturing professional relationships. What started as a dynamic working partnership has blossomed into a cherished friendship. It’s a testament to the power of trust, mutual respect, and shared goals in the workplace. Our conversation at Pennyhill Park wasn’t just a trip down memory lane; it was a meaningful career review. We discussed personal growth, future career aspirations, and the evolving landscape of organisations, wellbeing and people management. I also took the opportunity to seek feedback on my area of special interest for supporting women in midcareer and beyond. For anyone fortunate enough to have such an amazing ‘right-hand’ person in their career, never underestimate the value of that relationship. It's these connections that often shape not just our professional paths but also our personal lives. Here's to the incredible journeys we undertake and the wonderful people who walk with us along the way.
