Several of England’s cleanest seaside swimming spots deteriorate in autumn and winter, an unpublished government report has found. Outside the bathing water season, which runs from the middle of May to September, there is no regular site monitoring for harmful bacteria. It is a brain with 50 million connections, 140,000 neurons and 8,400 cell types. The task of mapping it, researchers said, is a “landmark” achievement and “tour de force” of neuroscience. Scientists have for the first time produced a complete map of the brain of a fruit fly. In doing so, by positioning each neuron along with its connections, an international team of researchers has achieved a longstanding goal of neuroscience: mapping the brain of a creature with complex behaviour. Fruit flies, long a favoured insect for basic research, can walk, fly, taste, seduce and form memories. They do all this, though, with a brain smaller than a pinhead

Employment advisers will be stationed in NHS hospitals under plans to make finding a job a central part of mental health treatment. Ministers are planning a push to focus NHS care on helping the long-term sick back to work, saying it is central to growing the economy and bringing down the benefits bill. Mental health problems are the fastest-rising cause of disability and ministers believe working will offer tangible benefits to many patients at the same time as controlling spiralling costs to the taxpayer

🔎 Analysis: From his atomic bunker in the Jerusalem hills, Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, watched his country swat away a barrage of Iranian ballistic missiles that would have overwhelmed most country’s air defences. Envisioned as a latter-day Noah’s Ark, the underground complex can withstand nuclear, chemical and biological attacks, and has such tight security that anyone entering must surrender their phone at the door. Last October the prime minister was fighting for political survival. Now he has Israel’s enemies on the run — and he’s consolidating his power at home

It is a company that can trace its heritage back to the industrial revolution, but now Johnson Matthey is at the forefront of Britain’s transition to clean energy. The company had long been a leader in catalytics — the science of chemical reactions — when in 2002 it acquired the catalyst technology of ICI Synetix in a £260 million deal. Two decades later it is part of the revival of Teesside, putting the region at the forefront of the UK clean-tech revolution

Starling Bank has been fined £29m by the City regulator for “shockingly lax” controls that left the financial system “wide open to criminals and those subject to sanctions”. The Financial Conduct Authority said the digital bank failed to “design, implement, and maintain adequate systems and controls to mitigate financial crime risks”. The bank’s financial controls “failed to keep pace with its growth” as it went from its first account in July 2016 to having 3.6m customers by 2023, the regulator said
