A team of researchers believe to a very high degree of certainty that they have identified the wreck of HMS Stephen Furness, a Royal Navy armed boarding steamer that was sunk in 1917. Not only have they done this, but they have found other ships and shown previous identifications to be incorrect — all by drawing together information from more than 70 institutions that is freely available online. The team utilised a recent sonar scan of the sea floor, but also used contemporaneous naval records, newspaper archives and even meteorological data, among dozens of other sources. While in the past this would have taken a great amount of time to gather, such information can now be accessed at the click of a button, which allowed the team to make a lot of finds at high speed
