The Veterans’ Foundation has launched the Paul Heward Memorial Grant in memory of its Chief Financial Officer, who died last summer. Paul joined the charity in 2017 just a year after it was founded by retired Major General David Shaw, becoming its second employee and playing an instrumental part in its success and growth. The first grant, of £35,000, has been awarded to Cumbria-based Woodland Xperiences, which gets people outdoors and closer to nature, in a safe, conversational environment. “Paul was a very active man, who loved the outdoors and adventure,” said David, the Veterans’ Foundation CEO and founder. “Paul loved to be outdoors and having fun. He knew the value of activity, fresh air and fun to keep body and mind healthy and agile, so it seemed fitting that our memorial grant should be awarded to a charity operating in that sector.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ej5e8nDd

Head of Fundraising | Scotty’s Little Soldiers | Helping bereaved military children smile

🙏 The news is out. The Veterans' Foundation have brilliantly continued their recognition of the value delivered by Scotty's Little Soldiers and stepped up to become a multi-year, six-figure funder. 👏 This is exactly what we need. Sophisticated, multi-year funders covering core costs enabling us to use our expertise to tackle the need. Sincere thanks to David Shaw and the team in Edinburgh and across the UK - and your talented trustees. 😍 Great to bump into their man Ryan in my home town of Sheringham - he was busy helping an old lady whose phone had run out of data and was tearful because she needed it for satnav to get back to Yorkshire. He called Tesco mobile for her and patiently walked her through what she needed to do. She cried with relief. 🫶 We can all help others more than we realise every day. Norrie Bartlett was just short of his 17th birthday when he joined the Royal Navy in 1942. Little did he know that two years later he would take part in D-Day - the biggest seaborne invasion in history and the operation that laid the foundations for the Allied victory in World War Two. Now, at the age of 98, he remembers the events of that historic day - and pays respect to his fallen comrades. *You can help heroes like Norrie by playing the Veterans’ Lottery. Please take a few minutes to listen to five remarkable D-Day veterans as they relive their individual experiences on that historic day in June, 1944. Sadly, four of them are no longer with us – but their incredible bravery will be remembered forever. Lest we forget. *You can help British veterans by playing the Veterans’ Lottery. The Veterans’ Foundation has awarded a grant of £30,000 to Liverpool FC Foundation, to fund its military veterans’ project, Barracks to Boot Room. That brings the total to £50,000 that the Veterans’ Foundation has awarded to fund football and wellbeing-related programmes at the club that help veterans keep fit, make friends and improve their mental health. A core group of 80 veterans attend regular free physical activity and wellbeing sessions at the Premier club’s Anfield stadium in Liverpool, though the programme has engaged with more than 3,000 veterans each year, since it was launched in 2012.
