Our differences make us stronger, more creative and better equipped to adapt to the challenges that the future will inevitably bring. The world we operate in is changing – politically, economically and most significantly, environmentally. These problems will only be overcome by teams that embrace, and reflect, the communities they serve. How can we design underpasses if we don’t understand who is using them? How can we better use our projects to help design-out loneliness, or make spaces more inclusive, if the designers’ backgrounds are all the same? Encouraging those people, like myself, who don’t see highways just as building roads, but as effecting positive change in our society, to become engineers, is crucial to the evolution of our industry.
