Gender and Sexuality, Supporting Young People

About us

The Kite Trust offers support to those young people who are LGBTQ+ or unsure of their sexual orientation or gender identity. We believe that everyone has the right to express their identity without facing discrimination or prejudice. The Kite Trust provides a diverse range of fun, positive, non-formal educational activities that offer young people opportunities to develop knowledge and skills whilst building their self-confidence and esteem. Young people are at the heart of our service and we work to ensure they have a voice and are actively involved in building brighter futures for all young people. The Kite Trust's services will develop inclusive of young people's influence and feedback to us, as we evolve and learn with them. As an organisation we seek to communicate openly and honestly with young people, our partners and stakeholders in order to ensure the best possible outcomes for the young people we work with. We strive to make our services as accessible as possible. We challenge homophobia and heterosexism, and are vocal and active when we encounter prejudice and discrimination against LGBTQ+ young people. We seek to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues throughout all sectors, challenge stereotypes and negative assumptions about LGBTQ+ people, and work to build the capacity of mainstream partners to offer accessible and relevant services to LGBTQ+ youth.

🫶🏻 Trans Joy is Real 🫶🏻 Trans Community - You are Loved (and all my mates love you too)! 🏳️⚧️🫶🏻 This year I’ve take a role on the Board of Trustees for The Kite Trust 🙏🏻🏳️⚧️ The Kite Trust supports LGBTQ+ young people across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough – but over 90% of those taking part in the Trust activities are transgender, non-binary or exploring their gender in some other awesome and creative way 🙏🏻 Gender expansive people have been facing frequent attacks recently on healthcare, on being supported in education, and even in the streets 😔 It’s been exhausting for the Team but they won’t stop! 💪🏻 That’s why The Trust have launched a new campaign #TransJoyIsReal. We’ve got a message to spread and you can be part of it too. Please look them up and see how you can support 💰🙏🏻🏳️⚧️🙌🏻 The Kite Trust ⭐️ Pip Jamie Gardner Ceri Ann Littlechild Trowan Midgley ⭐️ #lgbtqia #transawareness #transPeopleAreLoved #pridemonth #trustee #transYouth #charity #centrica

📢 "These projects wouldn’t have been half as impactful had they been undertaken on our own, as we’ve been able to learn from experts in creative approaches, clinical settings, training and campaigning, whilst drawing upon the wealth of lived experience brought by everyone at The Kite Trust. Working together built understanding of each other." 🤝 The power of collaboration and system working in meeting the needs of diverse communities. 👀 Read more about The Kite Trust's recent workshop at the Fullscope event, An Invitation to Think, on our blog: https://lnkd.in/g4pwYZbs

The Kite Trust is disappointed to learn of the High Court’s decision to uphold the ban on puberty blockers that was introduced earlier this year, despite a legal challenge by Trans Actual and a young trans person. We will continue to work with our colleagues in the LGBTQ+ youth sector to fight for trans young people to access the healthcare that they need and deserve. We want to highlight this quote from the press release on today’s announcement:  “..in the light of the Claimants’ evidence, the Judge found that more needed to be done to assist this cohort [trans+ young people] to access UK registered health services and NHS England and the Department for Health and Social Care should consider how this could be achieved as soon as possible and in any event before the next Order is made. This may require additional resources to be made available to this cohort.”  We are pleased to see this statement that more needs to be done to support trans+ young people to access vital healthcare, following the Cass Review’s acknowledgement that gender-affirming care for young people is not fit for purpose. We will respond in time to any consultation on extending the ban beyond September, and will continue to do everything in our power to support trans+ young people to be healthy, happy, and supported. We urge policy makers and politicians to engage with the communities affected by this legislation. We hope that those in power will take this opportunity to listen meaningfully to trans+ young people and their families, and take their views and needs into account when making further decisions that affect them. To trans+ young people and those who support them: we know this news may be difficult. We hear you and we are here for you. If you have questions or need support, please get in touch with us Info@thekitetrust.org.uk. Please know that The Kite Trust will continue to do whatever we can to amplify your voices and fight for your rights, and support you to be healthy, happy, and thriving.
