I'm Black, not BIPOC. Or POC, for that matter. In the past I've been referred to as a man of color or a person of color when having conversations about race. No longer. I'm Black. That's it. Why am I saying this? As an anti-racist educator, I kept noticing Black advocates getting burned by other communities of color, particularly when mentioning systemic racism and white supremacy. Then, the 2024 election happened. Again, people's actions spoke the loudest. Say what you want about people being motivated by a paycheck, they were willing to disregard their own rights and the rights of our most vulnerable populations in the process. Funny thing is, economists are already talking about increased prices that will occur because of 47's tariff policies. Economy aside, let's get to the real issue: proximity to whiteness is what many folks of color seek. Whether it's Anglicizing names, bleaching skin, or supporting anti-Black policies, it's the way to gain acceptance and status. Unfortunately that doesn't work in the long run. History is full of examples of marginalized folks colluding with those in power, from the Mongol Empire to American slavery to WWII Germany. And the results are the same. There's already a Tweet circulating from a far-right official stating how plans are in the works to deport naturalized citizens---in addition to undocumented immigrants. And don't think the sweeping anti-DEI laws won't harm you in the workplace, government, and everywhere in between. And the Black people who've been sucking up to racist whites and assuaging their feelings are also going to get a rude awakening. To be clear, I genuinely do care about the experiences of non-Black people of color. It is just tiring to advocate for racial equality when so many folks distance themselves from Black people. #DiversityAndInclusion #Diversity #AntiRacism #RacialEquity #Equality Image description: Illustration of a Black woman saying she identities as Black, not as a person of color.
