  • Hurricane Preparedness Tips: 1. Stay Informed Monitor Weather Updates: Regularly check reliable sources like the National Hurricane Center (NHC), local news stations, or weather apps for hurricane updates. Sign up for Emergency Alerts: Enroll in County's emergency alerts system via text, email, or phone When a mandatory evacuation is issued, do not delay—leave immediately. 2. Prepare Your Evacuation Plan a. Identify Your Evacuation Zone b. Plan Your Route Evacuation Routes: Identify the major highways and evacuation routes leading out of area: Avoid taking secondary roads or trying shortcuts during evacuation. Stick to the main highways that are designated for evacuation and often monitored by law enforcement for traffic flow. c. Destination Head to Safe Zones: Plan to evacuate inland or to a non-evacuation zone. If traveling out of state, try to move away from the storm’s projected path. 3. Prepare Your Emergency Kit Pack a "Go Bag" with essential supplies that will last at least 72 hours. Include: Documents: Identification (IDs, insurance policies, medical records), proof of residence, and any critical documents in a waterproof container. Cash: ATMs may be unavailable during a power outage. Clothing and Bedding: Include blankets, pillows, and warm clothing. Food & Water: Non-perishable food (canned food, protein bars), bottled water (1 gallon per person per day). Personal Items: Prescription medications, toiletries, and hygiene items. Electronics: Cell phone, charger, portable power bank, and battery-powered radio. First-Aid Kit: Include bandages, antiseptics, and necessary medical supplies. Pet Supplies: Food, water, leash, and any necessary medications for your pets. Entertainment: Books, games, or activities for children. 4. Secure Your Home Before You Leave Close All Windows and Doors: Make sure they are tightly sealed to prevent water damage. Shut Off Utilities: Turn off gas, electricity, and water if advised by authorities or if the property could sustain flood damage. Move Valuables to Higher Ground: Elevate items to reduce the risk of water damage, especially electronics and important documents. Bring Inside Outdoor Items: Secure patio furniture, trash cans, plants, and anything else that could become a projectile in high winds. 5. Evacuate Early Leave As Soon As Possible: Traffic on evacuation routes becomes heavy as more people try to leave the city. Plan to evacuate before the mandatory evacuation is in effect if possible. Avoid Last-Minute Fuel Stops: Gas stations may run out of fuel. Fill your gas tank early and consider bringing an extra gas can if needed. Check Traffic Reports: Use apps like Google Maps or Waze to get real-time traffic updates and look for less congested routes. 6. Know What to Expect at Evacuation Shelters What to Bring: Bring your emergency kit, including bedding and essential supplies, as shelters may not provide them. Timing: Arrive early. Shelters have limited capacity and fill up quickly.
