Better health and care for all

About us

Our vision is better health and care for all. We are proud pioneers in integrating health and social care nationally. We passionately believe that the best way to care for people is by focusing on what matters to them, putting them at the centre of everything we do and integrating services around them. We believe that care as close to home as possible benefits everyone. Never has our vision been more important. The impact of COVID-19 has not only increased the pressure across all aspects of health and social care, but those who live in our most deprived coastal communities have seen an increasing gap in health inequalities. We provide health and social care services to our people in their own homes or in their local community. We also run Torbay Hospital (providing acute hospital services) as well as five community hospitals, stretching from Dawlish to Brixham. We support around 500,000 face-to-face contacts with patients in their homes and communities each year and see over 78,000 people in our A&E department annually. We serve a resident population of approximately 286,000 people, plus about 100,000 visitors at any one time during the summer holiday season. We are passionate about creating a fairer and more inclusive NHS for everyone. We employ over 6,500 staff, including doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, consultants, and physiotherapists, as well as highly skilled managers, administrators and technical experts. Our people work in a wide range of settings and locations across our communities, depending on their individual role or circumstances. We also have over 800 volunteers who make a difference every day to the people we care for and the services we provide. We were proud to be the first NHS Trust in England to integrate hospital and community care with social care. We know first-hand the positive impact that working together in partnership with others has on our local population – giving everyone a brighter future.

  • 💙 | We are now one of the best performing organisations in the country for cancer performance thanks to the hard work and dedication of you all who have allowed us to achieve some incredible results these past few years. 📅 Our colposcopic performance which targets cervical cancer is excellent, with over 95 per cent of patients assessed within the six week national target. 🔍 Our new RT-CT radiotherapy scanner has seen 562 patients since it went clinical on late in January, and along with two new CT / MRI pads we have cut waiting lists in this area in half. 🔬 We are the second highest recruiter to cancer trials in the country and the only hospital in the South West to be chosen as trial site for the pioneering cancer vaccine. #CancerAwarenessMonth

  • ✂️ | Our trauma and orthopaedic colleagues opened their new training suite and dayroom on Ella Rowcroft ward last week 🎉 The new educational suite aims to bring training to the department to make it easier for colleagues. It also provides a refurbished and comfortable space for those staying on the ward, where resources and information are available on their procedures. The team worked closely with colleagues from estates and facilities on the project. Thank you to everyone who helped make this work possible 💙

  • 💕 | Baby Loss Awareness Week is an important time to remember and commemorate our much-loved and missed little ones. Anna Stewart, our bereavement midwife, shared a lovely reading at one of our previous annual service for little ones on how our colleagues remember and reflect 💙 Our maternity, chaplaincy and community nursing teams will once again be organising a little ones remembrance weekend later this year. Families can join us for a craft morning at Torbay Hospital on Saturday 30 November, followed by our service on Sunday 01 December. Look out for more details soon 🔜 Find out more about Baby Loss Awareness Week 👉 https://lnkd.in/d-nY6mF

  • 🗣️ | Let’s raise awareness of mental health this World Mental Health Day! Our colleagues at Children and Family Health Devon (CFHD) have been putting the spotlight on children and young people’s mental health. We know that our young people face many unique challenges including school pressures, social relationships and looking after their emotional wellbeing. Our Mental Health Support Team in Schools (MHST) do some amazing work with schools, and they have lots of resources and video to support education settings 👉 https://ow.ly/ZQ5i50THzoU Part of their work is supporting young people to become mental health ambassadors, helping to support their fellow pupils 👇👇 #WorldMentalHealthDay

  • 🌳 Brixham shared-decision making council have used their collective voice to source funds and sponsorship to recreate their ward garden. This space has now been transformed into a beautiful and peaceful outdoor space for our patients and their relatives to enjoy. As part of the project, they've also added new posters featuring stunning images of Brixham. These posters will help our patients connect with the local community.

  • 📊 | It’s not just women who get breast cancer; around 370 men in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Our male moving on group hopes to inspire men to get checked if they have any signs and symptoms. It also supports men who have been diagnosed, treated or recovered from breast cancer. It’s important everyone is aware of the signs of breast cancer and seek help from your GP as quickly as possible because the sooner you’re diagnosed, the quicker you can begin treatment. If you to do one thing this month, it’s to familiarise yourself with the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, to check your body and to contact your GP if you’re worried. 🧍♂️ https://lnkd.in/e6VBZfq6 🧍♀️ https://lnkd.in/eMCtvzE7 #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #CancerAwarenessMonth

  • 💗 October is breast cancer awareness month and our screening programme is also celebrating its 20th anniversary this month. Torbay’s screening programme has been a remarkable success. We spoke to Katie, Jen and Merci about our screening programme and what people should look out for 👇 Over the past two decades we have screened in the region of 200,000 women and detected around 2,000 cancers. That’s our mums, daughters, sisters, aunties, granddaughters, friends, colleagues and neighbours who have received a diagnosis and care plan to get the treatment they need. Early detection is absolutely key in us being able to tackle cancer and in this area we are going from strength-to-strength; last year we took receipt of our new state of the art scanning van and across our mobile and static sites we screened almost 13,000 women and around 1,700 of these women were for the first time. #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth

  • 🐕 | We were delighted to welcome Steve Darling, Torbay's new MP to Torbay Hospital today and are looking forward to working in partnership with him. We shared the challenges of our ageing hospital estate and the brilliant work that our Endoscopy Unit and Theatres teams are doing to reduce waiting lists. Jennie was a big hit with everyone she met!
