We may be a small but mighty team at Trace Structural Investigations, but we’ve got some furry colleagues who always have our backs—meet Hiccup and Astrid! Sure, they might not be GPR experts or know how to read corrosion maps, and yes, they tend to slack off when the workload gets heavy (napping is their real specialty), but their presence is invaluable when it comes to keeping morale high.

The Infrastructure Condition Assessment Magnetic Method (iCAMM), developed by InspecTerra Inc., is a revolutionary tool for corrosion mapping and inspecting reinforced and steel structures. Using passive magnetic inspection, iCAMM delivers rapid, detailed assessments without the need for direct surface contact or extensive preparation. On a recent project, we marked all the bars on a balcony and deployed the iCAMM along each one. After analyzing the data, we created a heat map showing corrosion levels, from blue (little corrosion) to red (significant corrosion). The results were calibrated against the exposed bars, allowing us to calculate section loss. Trace Structural Investigations is two years old! A massive thank you to all those who have supported us and our clients! It is actually a tiny bit more than two months but we have been so busy its hard to keep track. It's been a roller coaster and there has been a few lows but a lot of highs. our mission to improve the structural investigation space is working, and we couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve accomplished. We’re especially grateful for our repeat clients who truly understand what we do, why we do it, and the value we provide. That, to me, is proof we’re doing something right! Of course, we’ve learned a lot along the way—some lessons were tough and expensive, but absolutely necessary. Big thanks to Paul Dennis to supporting us through the minefield that is insurance (would highly recommend). Also to Matthew Bennett in supporting our money questions. One key to our success is Kompass BMS though. Without this at the start we would have been a mess. Get this (if you have not already)! Thanks to Jan Francke and the team at Geolitix (Lisandro Martínez) as Geolitix has made our life much easier. Also a big thanks to Allied Associates Geophysical Ltd and Subsurface Measurement Technology for supplying loads of kit, and fixing it when I break it. We have also been well supported by Lee Olton and Rob Forbes on several projects, great teams and they have been amazing. We have a lot planned for the future and will continue to see where we can improve the industry and what engineers get from structural investigations. Doing what we do best and undertaking a NIA of a bridge, at night, in the depths of Wales. Thanks to AFI Facelift Access Hire's under-bridge unit Kyle and I were able to undertake the NIA of the bridge from above and below. The client had limited information and a lot of assumptions about the bridge’s construction and where key elements like post-tension tendons might be. Trace Structural Investigations were called in to undertake an investigation to determine how the bridge was built, where the assumed post-tension tendons were and anything else about the bridge. After a long night on site, we now have the data to perform detailed analysis and interpretation—delivering usable, actionable insights (not just pretty pictures). Using this information, along with future targeted intrusive works, the client will be able to fully understand the bridge’s construction and condition. We don't just look at concrete and we have a few masonry projects coming up. Non-intrusive analysis (#NIA) of masonry arches is always an interesting project. Unlike concrete, the subsurface is very heterogeneous which provides a lot reflections, some of which are noise but a lot of them offer valuable information into the condition of the masonry. To support the analysis and interpretation of the data simulations are a big help. We have a few of them for masonry structures so that the client (and us) can be confidant in the results of the survey.
