Reduced daylight hours during Autumn and Winter bring additional hazards, particularly for those working evening or night shifts or early mornings. By considering the heightened risks your workers face when working at night and agreeing how they will work you’ll improve their safety. Increased risks could include slips, trips and falls; harsh weather conditions for outdoor workers; and fatigue for those driving. Tips from the Trackplot Limited team: - Take heed of weather warnings and local conditions. - Check the safety of your vehicle regularly. - Dress appropriately – hi-vis vest, layers of warm clothing and take spare clothing, appropriate footwear. - Bring the right equipment - torch and / or headtorch, spare batteries, food and drink. An estimated 15% of the US overall workforce are lone workers (Verdantix, 2021b) and in the UK it is a significant 22% of the total working population. That's a lot of people. And the percentage of lone workers is expected to continue increasing due to continuing demand for greater working flexibility and increased worker autonomy, a requirement for greater utilisation of resources, and to add to that business travel (which is usually a solitary activity) is expected to continue to grow in 2024. Lone workers are prevalent in all sectors from local authorities, healthcare, construction and engineering, utilities to charities. To keep lone workers safe the risks associated with different industries and occupations require different deployment strategies and safety measures. Remember no one solution fits all. The trend for lone working continues to rise globally. Be aware that although lone workers encounter many of the same hazards as those who work alongside others, working alone can increase both the likelihood of incidents and the severity of adverse outcomes. A survey in 2021 reported that 68% of companies surveyed reported experiencing an incident involving a lone worker in the past three years, with 20% described as “quite severe” or “very severe” (National Safety Council 2023).
