"China Customs has achieved notable progress in preventing wildlife crimes. However, given the ongoing demand for illicit wildlife products and the evolution of smuggling methods, targeted training is more crucial than ever." - Xu LING, Director of TRAFFIC in China. This month, we teamed up with the Chinese Academy of Customs Administration to deliver a workshop - Customs Officers have come away with renewed confidence in verifying wildlife trade legality and drive to combat trafficking of timber and other wildlife products. ➡️ https://loom.ly/qZ6g52o World Customs Organization | NICFI - Norway's International Climate and Forest Initiative | Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH #China #Customs #training #IWT #timber #wildlifetrade

TRAFFIC has officially put feet on the ground in Latin America! But there's little time to celebrate as there's a lot of work to be done: Latin America is the most biodiverse region in the world but with that comes the pressures of illegal wildlife trade. All species pictured are on CITES Appendices and listed on the IUCN Red List as: ▪️ Jaguar (Panthera onca) - Near Threatened ▪️ Turquoise-fronted Amazon (Amazona aestiva) - Near Threatened ▪️ Black Howler Monkey (Alouatta nigerrima) - Least Concern ▪️ South American Coati (Nasua nasua) - Least Concern ▪️ Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco) - Least Concern As well as habitat loss, land use, and climate change threats, these species, like many others, are also hunted for trophies or illegal trade in body parts and meat, or captured for the pet trade. CITES Animals Committee #AC33 adopted all the recommendations from a new review co-authored by TRAFFIC. Following 104 shark and ray species listed and the release of TRAFFIC's groundbreaking Missing Sharks review at #COP19, this follow-up finds inconsistent reporting by CITES Parties is a major problem in saving threatened shark and ray species. "We are losing our forests at a very rapid rate. That is why this new Legislative Guide to combat forest crime is vital." Our Senior Advisor for Forest Governance and Trade spoke with UNODC, stressing the urgent need for governments to improve forestry laws and the need for cross-sectoral collaboration to change the trajectory on the future of our forests. 📺 https://loom.ly/kacm_40 This new guide from UNODC will be a great step forward in achieving that. What is TRAFFIC doing to end illegal logging and move towards timber trade that is legal, sustainable, and economically-beneficial? 👉 https://loom.ly/sv7a42I NICFI - Norway's International Climate and Forest Initiative #ForestGovernance #TimberTrade #TImber #UNODC #UNTOC #Logging #Forests #Forestry

In the words of The Wildlife Trusts Chief Executive Craig Bennett, we’re in an #EvidenceEmergency! We're all about data and robust evidence at TRAFFIC and that’s why we, along with Cambridge Conservation Initiative , U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and Conservation Evidence held a workshop on ‘Delivering the effectiveness revolution in conservation: lessons from organisations, policy makers and funders.’ 200 people tuned in online and 57 came in person to the #DavidAttenboroughBuilding to discuss embedding evidence into decision-making and where to research to fill the considerable gaps in the evidence.
