  • One of the first woodland blooms, primroses are a joyful sign of spring. 🌼 Found across the UK, they thrive in damp, sheltered spots like slopes, riverbanks, and woodland clearings. 🌳 Early wildflowers like these provide an important nectar source for pollinators. 🦋 ✨ Did you know? Primroses are an indicator of ancient woodland! Keep an eye out for these delicate yellow flowers on your next walk. 👣 [Image Description: A photo of primroses on a mossy slope.] #Spring #Bloom #Primroses #Wildflower #Woodland

  • Our ecologists have some pretty spectacular days out in the field 🌲 Our Wild Pine Project Officer, Jane, loved this visit to one of the forgotten Caledonian pinewood landscapes ⬇ "I've been going through pine records from last season and came across my photo of this ancient pine. Whilst recording this special tree, I spotted a crossbill munching through the pinecones. It was such a wonderful moment to see this pinewood species, even where the woodland has fragmented into small pockets. I'm lucky to have beautiful memories like this from work!" - Jane While breathtaking, wild pine sites like this are in a fragile state. Many are in critical condition, clinging on in isolated pockets. That’s why we’re mapping and identifying these important refuge areas and ancient pine populations - so they can become targets for restoration action. • Scaling new heights for rewilding 🌲 Gathering local seed to grow new trees isn’t always easy - it sometimes calls for expert help! 👷🧗 Yesterday, skilled tree climbers Mark and Kyle from Arborteering Ltd (based on Skye) scaled the towering Scots pines at Dundreggan to collect cones from high branches. 🌲 Scots pine cones release their seeds before falling from the tree, so we need climbers to carefully collect them before that happens. The seeds from these cones will be nurtured in our nursery and the wee trees will be planted at Dundreggan - helping to restore our native woodland on the estate. 💚🌍 [Image Descriptions: A series of photos of tree climbers getting roped up and scaling Scots pine trees to collect cones.] #SeedCollection #ScotsPine #VisitDundreggan #TreeNursery #RestoreForests

  • Have you heard the drumming of a woodpecker in the forest? 🌲 The great spotted woodpecker is the most common of the UK’s three woodpecker species, and in many cases, is often heard before it is seen. 👀 In spring, the male makes a distinctive and characteristic drumming sound, which is produced by a rapid hammering sequence of blows from its bill on the trunk or branch of a tree - to both proclaim his territory and also to attract a female for mating. Did you know? 🤔 The population of the great spotted woodpecker has increased in Britain in recent decades! And this is likely to continue in Scotland, as we restore more of the Caledonian forest. 🙌 Find out more 👉 https://lnkd.in/eD55EHAm [Image Description: A photo of a great spotted woodpecker on a moss and lichen covered branch.] #Woodpecker #Birdlife #WildlifeWatching #CaledonianForest #Scotland
