Do you ride a motorcycle or know anyone who does? Would you contribute 15 minutes of your time to a research project that will help reduce the numbers of young people killed or seriously injured in motorcycle collisions in the UK? The legislation on motorcycle helmet testing and approvals changed in January 2024, at long last raising the safety standards for motorcycle helmets. So, this is the ideal moment to build on surveys we previously ran in 2015 and 2020 for DfT which explored UK motorcyclists’ attitudes to helmet safety and their experiences of buying new helmets. We are inviting you to complete a survey about your helmet usage. 👇 https://bit.ly/469HfAM The responses to this survey will help shape the Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme (SHARP) and ensure that safety in the riding community remains a priority for the next generation of riders. The answers we collect this time around will keep the scheme relevant as SHARP plans for changes to the helmet testing process, and changes to the ways in which the consumer information scheme educates riders about their choice of helmet. Knowing what, and why people ride, and how, and why, and where they buy a helmet, is essential to inform future public funding of the SHARP scheme, to make it deliver on its aims. Bikers have a tremendous community spirit and look out for one another’s safety. Encouraging others to complete this questionnaire is a simple good deed. Got time right now? Here’s the link again: https://bit.ly/469HfAM The survey will be open until 25th August. SHARP is funded and managed by the DfT and delivered by TRL. #motorcyclesafety #motorcyclehelmet #helmetsafety

Fife Council has recently surpassed its 300th member in the ECO Stars Fleet Recognition Scheme. The programme supports local fleet operators to improve efficiency, reduce fuel consumption and emissions as well as make cost savings. It has grown considerably from 2018 when Fife’s ECO Stars schemes had 25 members. It now has 304 commercial fleet members across 10,753 vehicles and 171 taxi and private hire operator members across 683 vehicles. MGS Logistics Limited, a medium sized heavy haulage specialist with depots in Aberdeen, Rosyth, Great Yarmouth and Uithoorn in the Netherlands, recently became the 300th commercial fleet member. Cllr Jan Wincott, Fife Council’s Spokesperson for Environment and Climate Change said: “I’m pleased to welcome MGS Logistics as a member of Fife ECO Stars Scheme and for them to contribute to the delivery of Fife’s Air Quality Strategy. “Fife Council’s own fleet was the first council in Scotland to be awarded a 5-star rating from ECO Stars and it’s fantastic to see the Fife ECO Stars Fleet Recognition scheme continuing to recruit strongly with a year-on-year increase in the number of operators adopting ultra-low emission vehicles.” Stuart McLean, ECO Stars Advisor added: “We are delighted to see the scheme grow and welcome its 300th member. Fife Council has consistently adopted a proactive approach towards reducing transport emissions and improving air quality in the local area. “There are real benefits to joining the scheme, not only in terms of cost and fuel savings but to the environment.” Stuart Paley, MGS Logistics’ HSE Manager said: “We are pleased to be the 300th commercial fleet operator in Fife to be awarded ECO Stars membership. It is a real win, win for our business by showing our customers that we are environmentally responsible and at the same time helping to maintain the good air quality we have in Fife.”

Where do bright ideas originate? how might an organisation harness them, to get from the proverbial drawing board to operational excellence? Members of The World Road Association opted to deviate from typical technical research and instead PIARC commissioned TRL to investigate innovation processes at the organisational level. What constitutes best practice and gets results fastest? TRL's research project explores the ways in which road and transport agencies currently encourage and sustain innovation, and identifies lessons that may be learned and applied from other sectors. The full report is available here: https://bit.ly/3LVZekW
