TRT Lighting Ltd (Thorlux Road and Tunnel Lighting) is one of ten companies within the FW Thorpe Group, and evolved from parent company Thorlux Lighting. Building on more than 85 years of experience, TRT designs, manufactures and supplies sustainable and environmentally friendly performance lighting products for the road/street, tunnel and exterior lighting markets. LED lighting solutions bring another dimension to how roads, streets, tunnels and general exterior spaces are illuminated. TRT's ability to understand and adapt to the needs of its customers ensures that developed products are technically and mechanically sound and provide energy efficient, long-lasting lighting solutions with excellent returns on investment. The company is also committed to reducing obtrusive light and light trespass in order to protect the night sky from light pollution. This preservation is critical not only for the well-being of people and wildlife, but also for scientific and astronomical purposes. A range of TRT products can be used in dark-sky applications, thanks to their International Dark-Sky Association approval. TRT Lighting are proud to manufacture its products in the UK. All luminaires being rigorously tested to all relevant global and regional standards using in-house testing facilities. We are also committed to minimising the environmental impact of both our manufacturing processes and our products. However, even with the most responsible approach, some carbon dioxide (CO2) will be released into the atmosphere as an indirect result of factory and selling activities and customers’ use of luminaires. As part of the FW Thorpe Group, we are involved in an ambitious Carbon Offsetting Scheme to help compensate for the emissions produced by the Group companies. The Group chose to plant trees on 215 acres of land in Devauden, Monmouthshire. Since 2009 we have planted 179,412 trees.

Nominated: The streetlight made from Oak A streetlight whose housing is made from Oak has been nominated for a Build Back Better Award in the 2024 lighting category. The Oaken streetlight from TRT Lighting Limited has an industry-leading TM66 score for circularity of 3.1, the highest published score for any luminaire under the LIA/CIBSE certification scheme. TRT says the achievement is underpinned by a 97 per cent reduction in ‘cradle to gate’ embodied carbon compared to a baseline of aluminium cast alloy bodies. Using TM65 methodology, the Oaken represents a 50 per cent reduction in embodied carbon in the complete luminaire compared to the company’s Aspect Mini (Aspect Mini 66kg CO2e / Oaken 34kg CO2e). Its European oak housing is sourced from PEFC certified forests that promote sustainable harvesting practices. The use of laminate wood strips, which might have otherwise been disregarded for furniture applications, further underscores TRT’s commitment to resource efficiency and sustainability in material use. A unique feature is that this product dimensionally morphs in size according to the product specification, minimising material regardless of the variant, reducing its embodied carbon. Oaken production is on a made-to-order basis thus reducing stock profiles and associated carbon emissions of producing excess volumes. The luminaire incorporates 100 per cent post-industrial recycled polycarbonate for its gear enclosure using whilst still achieving an IP66 rating. The gear tray is made from over 90 per cent recycled aluminium components, which not only minimises waste but reduces the heating processes and eliminates the need for mining raw materials. The choice of unpainted aluminium simplifies the recycling process. Performance-wise, the Oaken excels with highly efficient PMMA and PC lens options, achieving up to 191.7 LL/CW system efficiency. Its driver operates at up to an impressive 92 per cent efficiency, complemented by various lighting control options that enhance energy and cost savings. The lantern is supplied with low carbon copper mains cable. The Oaken has gained International DarkSky Association accreditation, ensuring TRT’s commitment to protecting and preserving the night sky from light pollution. • The Build Back Better Awards celebrates innovation, creativity, social purpose and environmental leadership in the build environment.
