About us

Our approach is based on appreciating how people perform and react in times of complex change and transformation. After decades working at senior levels in major organisations we understand how to get things done, what works and what doesn’t. We pride ourselves on delivering practical solutions that reflect each client’s particular culture and challenges. We believe that as well as winning the battle for logic, organisations need to win the battle for emotion. This means commitment to building understanding, trust and advocacy as a critical part of the change process. Widening your horizons This week I’ve enjoyed the London Film Festival. It is one of my favourite weeks of the year, in large part because you get to see films that you are unlikely to see otherwise as well as fascinating Q&As with directors, producers and actors that follow the film. So far this week we’ve seen a horror/psychological thriller called “The Weekend” from Nigeria, a shocking yet reaffirming Brazilian true-life story, “I’m Still Here” mainly set during the time of the Brazilian military junta of the 1970s and the British premiere of “Nickel Boys” which tells the shocking story of a Florida boys’ home. Later today we finish our festival with a Polish film called “Under the Volcano”. Quite an eclectic mix. Perhaps the number one skill you need as a communicator is to be able to understand your audience. One of the things I most enjoyed about working in global roles was having the opportunity to develop an appreciation for different cultures, languages and ways of doing things. A big mistake I’ve seen made is to think that the way we do things in the UK will work everywhere else. Unless you’re prepared to put the time in, to listen, to talk, to build relationships, to be curious then you’ll struggle to understand how different audiences behave.   For me the London Film Festival is one way to see culture from across the world. Not every movie needs to come from Hollywood you know. #LondonFilmFestival #culture #communications

What are the real life experiences of AI?

Is AI improving process and quality or at the risk of quality? In this morning's People Lab mailer contained a link to some interesting articles as always. One which caught my interest described How AI is Transforming HR. In the article, one of the areas AI is making a huge difference to HR is in recruitment, enhancing how companies source, assess and hire talent. You have a range of AI tools revolutionising talent acquisition, allowing for apparently smarter candidate identification and even automating interview scheduling. Is this the case or is this more the spin? I ask because most of what I hear or read from people looking for new roles is increasing frustration about how to work out recruitment processes where you may not talk to a real person until a second or third stage, with often no real understanding of why initial decisions are made and nowhere to go to find out why. Is this right? Are companies investing in AI tools regardless of the impact to candidate experience? Is this an example where businesses are willing to ignore the impact on both successful and importantly unsuccessful candidates to make their process more automated (and therefore cheaper). Perhaps the even more important question is does this in fact increase the risk of losing better candidates at an early stage of the process? Or do these tools genuinely improve not only the process but also the quality? https://lnkd.in/eRYkzqdj

Does your dog bite? I happened to see the attached clip recently. In my opinion it is one of the greatest moments in comedy film history. As with any great comedy, its brilliance comes from its simplicity. That said, when you analyse it, you can see that how even a simple scene requires several different bits to come together to deliver comedy gold; most of all I think the immaculate delivery of the final payoff line from Graham Stark (who incidentally appeared in most of the Pink Panther films playing different characters). This wonderful scene gives us an important reminder about the danger that assumptions play in how we communicate. Key to our success as communicators is to help people understand. That means providing sufficient clarity to help people see what an issue means in their local situation without leaving too much space where people have questions unanswered so guess or assume. Just because something might be obvious to you doesn’t mean it will be understood as well by someone else. This is even more the case if members of your audiences are doing totally different roles, maybe working in different countries or reading something in a language they don’t fully speak. If the message is important then it is our responsibility to make sure meaning and the resultant actions required are very clear. There are lots of ways you can do this. Concentrating on using simple words, short sentences and/or bullet points in your writing, using online tools to measure readability or asking colleagues (especially from other countries) to read something in advance to help confirm that it can easily be understood are some ways. There are others.  Words matter but even when you get them broadly right, Inspector Clouseau reminds us they may still not be understood if you’re not really clear. #communications #comedy #understanding https://lnkd.in/eypmFBwH
