𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 – 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝟑𝟓-𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐝 Lifting a 35-ton lid for a 138-ton pressure vessel at a Houston hydrostatic test centre was made easy with a Power Jacks lifting solution to allow maintenance access and the installation of test products inside the vessel. ‘Easy’ doesn’t typically go hand in hand with such a huge piece of equipment, but that’s where our custom-designed machinery comes in – a bespoke screw jack gantry crane system giving the team in Houston a flexible, compact and automated system. Safety was integral in this project, and two important features were included: — the system is self-locking and will not back-drive, even in the remote chance of brake failure on the motor — the integrated wear monitors provide a safe working indication as to when a screw jack requires gear set refurbishment Find out how we designed, manufactured and tested this equipment onsite in Scotland before transporting it to the US in the full case study on https://bit.ly/3TIw8di 𝙒𝙚 𝙜𝙪𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝙙𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙪𝙢 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙧𝙤-𝙢𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨. Yesterday at the Hartlepool 20” mill we were pleased to host the National Gas Transmission team to discuss the role that steel and UK manufacturers will play in supporting in the design and development of hydrogen pipelines. National Gas operate the backbone of Britain’s energy system today. They transport gas to power stations, major industries, storage facilities, more than half a million businesses and around 23 million homes. Kamal Rajput, Strategic business development lead at Tata Steel said, “It was great to host the National Gas Innovation and design team who were very well engaged and the discussions were very positive.” #TataSteelUK | #Hartlepool | #Infrastructure | #Hydrogen

Where the equipment in the Combination mill has been commissioned, we’ve started to install a new technology based security system using radio frequency identification to control and monitor access, known as RFID. Each person that requires access inside the mill will have a tag or fob that contains a microchip programmed with their access approvals which is emitted by an antennae and read by the entry points. Staying with technology, the second image shows a Siemens panel board, one of a suite being installed, this one contains the drives for the forming mill motors and all of their terminations for the fans and encoders. 👷♀️👷♀️ MAIR RESEARCH S.P.A. | RRS Group | #TataSteelUK

October #TBT is going to be all about trains > Railway enthusiasts will certainly know of it, but the Worcester Locomotive Society own a Kitson 0-6-0 Saddle Tank steam locomotive, No 5474, ‘Carnarvon’, which originally worked in the iron ore quarries at our predecessor Stewarts and Lloyds, Corby. The locomotive was originally built in 1934 by Kitson and Co of Leeds, to a design by Manning Wardle (ceased trading in 1926). The design dates from around 1917 when Manning Wardle built 6 locomotives for Stewarts and Lloyds to work at the quarry at Corby. When Kitson and Co stopped building locomotives in 1937, the design passed to Robert Stephenson Hawthorn which built 5 further locomotives. The Manning Wardle designs are now owned by Hunslet-Barclay. The locomotives of this design had a 3’ 6” diameter wheels and two by 16” X 22” inside cylinders, producing boiler pressure of 160 lbs, and 16,091 lbs tractive effort. The water capacity of the saddle tank was 800 gallons. With a weight of 38 tons, it was easily transported, and one of its special features is that all axles are independently sprung, to allow for poor track work such as quarries and the like. It was supplied new to Stewarts and Lloyds Ltd, steelworks in Corby for work in the ironstone quarries, where it spent its working life of 35 years hauling iron ore from the quarries to the blast furnaces. #TBT | #ThrowBackThursday | #Corby | #90Years

CMP Architects were recently in attendance on site for a site walk and review of works progressing at Newlands Park, Luton where Glencar are making great progress with the cladding and roofing well underway, and curtain walling now installed allowing internal works to progress at speed. The shape of the roof into the rear elevation of the building is really apparent now, and the sweeping curve over the main office really make this a stand out building. #DYK Corby is known as 'little Scotland'? When you reach the row of check-outs at Asda in Corby all you can hear are Scottish accents… At the turn of the 1900's Glasgow based Stewart & Lloyds bought the Corby Ironworks and in the 1920's commenced construction for the steel works on the edge of Corby village. The Scottish steel industry was in crisis after WW1 so many men came down to construct the steelworks and build homes for the future employees, who migrated South with their families during the 1930's and decades after. As the steelworks grew so did the migration and with that came the Scottish traditions, dialect and culture, Highland dancing and bagpipes and a love of Lorne (square) sausage and Irn-Bru. Combination mill update > We’ve recently had engineers from Signode setting up the bundle strappers as part of the mill finishing end commissioning. The strappers apply steel banding to the bundled tubes in order to maintain shape and enable safe transportation. We’re also in the process of installing safety fencing at the entry of the mill including entry gates into the area with integrated access controls. The last picture shows the tooling carts on the now fully welded quick-change rails at the forming mill. The final stage of grouting the rails into place will begin next week.
