Amazing results from our Collection & Recycling Programme partners in Essex!
The Essex Tree Guard recycling Hub opened again this week on the 20th & 21st of August for the second year running, and what a success it has been!! 🌳 ♻️ Essex Wildlife Trust kindly allowed us to use the work yard and barns of their HQ for the hub and storage of the plastic. A huge thank you EWT, Virginia Walsh, Rich Yates & Mike Appleton for your support and help with the project. We welcomed a variety of visitors from Essex and beyond. It was a great opportunity to engage with landowners and land managers. Everyone seemed really pleased to be able to use the free facility and be able to sustainably dispose of their plastic tree guards. ♻️ 105 bags were dropped off in total ♻️ Each bag holds on average 300 tree guards. ♻️ = 31,500+ tree guards to be sent off to be recycled! ♻️The average tree shelter weighs around 178 grams- so that’s roughly 5.607 Tonnes of plastic saved from landfill or being left out in the environment! 💪 At last year's Essex hub we had 37 bags… so that’s a 284% increase in bags from last year! I have loved working on this project and can’t wait to keep working on getting more hubs accessible to people in the future. Check out the Tubex Collection and Recycling Scheme for hubs open and opening up across the country. This hub was set up in partnership with Tubex Tree Shelters , Forest Plastics Working Group , Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust , Forestry Commission & Essex Wildlife Trust ♻️♻️♻️♻️♻️

If you've ever seen a tree that seems to shimmer in the wind - it just might be an aspen, our tree of the month for August. More commonly found in Scotland and relatively short lived, the aspen can form clonal colonies where one aspen can rapidly (at least in tree time) form a small grove of 'clone' trees. In the US, one such aspen clonal colony is thought to be the world's heaviest organism comprising around 47,000 genetically identical 'stems'. #treeofthemonth #trees #forestry
