Low Carbon Innovation Fund 2 portfolio company Connected Energy has partnered with UK clean energy technology company Altilium as part of a collaboration to extend the lifecycle of EV batteries. Connected Energy specialises in creating energy storage systems that utilise second-life EV batteries, whereas Altilium is renowned for its work in processing end-of-life batteries and converting scrap materials into low-carbon cathode active materials (CAM) for reuse in new batteries. Both companies will work together to create industry-wide standards for battery repurposing and recycling, following the principles of reuse, repurpose, and recycle. Through this partnership, Connected Energy aims to maximise the residual value of batteries at the end of their second life, while Altilium will gain enhanced access to feedstock for its recycling operations, including its upcoming Teesside refinery (ACT 4). This new plant is set to recycle batteries from 150,000 EVs annually and produce 30,000 metric tons of cathode active materials (CAM), which will satisfy 20% of the UK's projected demand by 2030.
