Restoration work is underway at St Mary's Heritage Centre! This Grade I listed former church originally dates back to the turn of the fourteenth century and is getting some much needed TLC, particularly focusing on the tower, south porch, and boundary walls. The project will cost a total of £300,000 and we're almost there but need your support to make it over the finish line. By becoming a member of the Trust, you can join our community in giving this old building a new lease of life and get exclusive behind the scenes updates and news about upcoming events. About us
The Tyne & Wear Building Preservation Trust (TWBPT) was established in 1979 to preserve the architectural heritage of Tyne and Wear through the repair, conservation and regeneration of our historic buildings and structures. Today, we work in close collaboration with communities, funders, volunteers and end users across all five Local Authority areas in the Tyne and Wear region to rescue, restore and safeguard buildings and structures under threat. Our work has evolved considerably in recent years and we work to achieve strong social and environmental aims through our core ethos of Heritage Better Managed.

We are extremely grateful to National Lottery players and the funding received from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to rescue this incredible building. The support we have received from Newcastle City Council has been incredible as we all share the dream of bringing this building back to life. https://lnkd.in/eNhYzxMJ

An incredible moment as the rescue of Keelmen's receives a huge boost from the support of National Lottery players. Our current plan is to start on site in 2026 to create 20 affordable housing units. The Keelmen’s Hospital was built in 1701 as an almshouse for sick and aged keelmen and their families, being paid for, somewhat remarkably, through the keelmen’s own charitable donations. #heritageatrisk Now an immense partnership with Newcastle City Council has allowed the project to secure the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund with a Stage 1 approval for a Heritage Enterprise grant. #heritagefund #nationallottery Match funding has also been secured from Historic England and The Architectural Heritage Fund. Thanks to many more of you for the support you have given over the past few years to achieve this.

This project is all about partnership. The building is being damaged by ASB and water ingress. We need to act as fast as possible to rescue it.
What is the collective name for a group of high viz vests? The rescue of Keelmen's Hospital in Newcastle starts here. It has many hurdles to overcome, but now is the time for action. #heritageatrisk

Tyne and Wear Building Preservation Trust reposted this
Keelmen's Hospital, a landmark building to many in Newcastle city centre, has been vacant and unused for 15 years. Now, thanks to a partnership project between Tyne and Wear Building Preservation Trust and Newcastle City Council, it is set for a bright new future as affordable housing. With support from Historic England, we awarded a Transforming Places through Heritage grant to this project earlier in the year, enabling plans for the restoration of this fantastic building to progress. There's just one month to go for sites/organisations to get themselves registered for Heritage Open Days 2024! The festival dates this year are the 6-15th of September and the registration deadline for organisers is the 8th of August. If you're just planning on visiting some of your favourite heritage attractions, or even somewhere new, don't panic! There's still plenty of time for you to get booked on to tours and activities. This year, the Trust are helping local sites and organisations make the most of their HODs experience, whether that be putting on exclusive special events or just opening up their doors if they're not normally open to visitors. If you work or volunteer at a site that might like to get involved in Heritage Open Days in Tyne and Wear, and want some advice on registering and promotion, contact Katie@twbpt.org.uk! #heritage #tyneandwear #heritageopendays #newcastleupontyne

Huge thanks to Florence Spaven MRICS for yesterday’s lovely visit to Bishop Auckland – it was great to see what’s being done both for built heritage and the local community as part of The Auckland Project and for the team to have a look around the magnificent Auckland Castle (many of us for the first time!). Yesterday morning, the Trust’s staff also visited Ushaw: Historic House, Chapels and Gardens and were given a fascinating tour by Andrew Heard, followed by a very informative chat with Ushaw's wider team. It was great to get a sense of the differences and continuities between general visitors curious about the site’s history and architecture, and visitors who attend special events held at places like Ushaw. The TWBPT team learned a lot about not only the sites we visited, but about all the things to consider about welcoming visitors to our own historic buildings and structures. With both sites having very significant religious histories, the visits also prompted us to reflect about how we can acknowledge this similar connection for a huge part of St. Mary’s Heritage Centre’s past as we look into its future. Massive thanks again to both!
