Held in what The Rt. Hon. The Lord Mayor Alderman Professor Michael Mainelli referred to in his excellent and amusing speech as “This Georgian council house”, the annual Distillers’ Livery Company banquet at Mansion House did not disappoint. Members of the Livery and their guests were once again royally entertained, wined and dined at this prestigious and wonderful event, in an atmosphere of grandeur and civic pride. About us
The Worshipful Company of Distillers’ is a Livery Company of the City of London dating back to the reign of King Charles I, with our Royal Charter being granted in 1638. There are currently 110 City Livery Companies, each numbered according to precedence, primarily based on the date of foundation. The Distillers’ Company is ranked number 69. Our founder was Sir Theodore de Mayerne, physician to Charles 1st, who in 1638 obtained a Royal Charter to regulate the distilling trade in the Cities of London, and the City of Westminster and within 21 miles thereof (later extended to 31 miles). Few of our Liverymen will be aware just how eminent a man our Founder was. Not just a Physician, he was a polymath, renaissance man and entrepreneur, whose repute spread all over Europe. Charitable giving is at the heart of life in the Distillers’ Company. The Distillers’ Charity (no. 1038763) was established in 1955 to carry forward the Livery’s philanthropic work. We support a number of charities including: The Drinks Trust: www.drinkstrust.org.uk The Alcohol Education Trust: www.alcoholeducationtrust.org The Lord Mayor’s “Better City For All” Appeal - Barking & Dagenham Youth Zone: www.onsideyouthzones.org/lord-mayors-appeal/

Hawaii could soon be welcoming a new distillery after a postgraduate student at Scotland’s Heriot-Watt University won the prestigious Distillers' Entrepreneurship award. Ethan Wang wants to open a new distillery on Hawaii’s scenic volcanic island of Maui and said he was in “total shock” after winning cash and support from an industry membership organisation to help make his idea happen. The Distillers Vocational Training and Education Committee (VTEC) came together at Bombay Sapphire Distillery in Hampshire. We were joined by Vicky Illanakovan of Equal Measures who discussed the challenges presented by under-represented groups in the wider drinks industry, and approaches organisations can take in raising awareness of Intersectionality.

The glorious surroundings of the Signet Library on Parliament Square in Edinburgh were once more the setting for the Scottish Dinner. Master Lorne MacKillop, together with Wardens and Clerks, welcomed Liverymen and Members of the Company and their guests. This annual occasion is always a wonderful opportunity for Liverymen to get together with others in the industry and related sectors, to highlight the excellent work being carried out by the Distillers Charity and the particular success of the Youth Action Fund, supported by the Distillers One of One Auction.
