Earlier this month, Tysers hosted its 2024 Summer Academy. It was an honour and a great pleasure to meet such a spectacular group of talented individuals. Tysers' CEO Mike Emmett, opened the Academy with a welcome breakfast, followed by several educational seminars delivered throughout the week at Tysers, Lloyd's of London and on the impressive HMS President. Academy participants enjoyed a fantastic farewell BBQ on their last night at the Leonardo Royal Hotel, with informal networking, live music and entertainment. The IT outage that occurred earlier today, 19 July, arose from an error in the coding of an update to the Falcon End Point protection software of cyber security firm Crowdstrike. The outage has impacted airports around the world with GP surgeries across England also affected. While the event wasn’t malicious, Toby Clowes, Head of Cyber Security at Tysers, highlights the role of cyber insurance which would respond to any business interruption caused by the outage. “It’s important to note that while the incident only appears to have impacted windows 10 operating systems (and not Mac or Linux), there has been significant impact globally across multiple industry verticals simultaneously. Crowdstrike responded promptly and released a fix that is being deployed, but this is a manual task across hundreds of thousands of devices which will take time to resolve.”   While it is far too early to understand the financial impacts, the incident is unprecedented and will be a defining one for the cyber insurance market. Toby adds: “The possibility of an aggregated scenario occurring globally at a vendor level has always been a possibility, but much of the discussion has been theoretical before today. On Wednesday July 10, Tysers Summer Academy participants attended a Q&A Underwriting Panel session in The Old Library at Lloyd's of London. The panel consisted of Janet Henderson, Group Executive Underwriter for Brit Insurance, Simon Hearn, Chief Underwriting Officer, London Wholesale Property and Casualty UK, at AXA XL, Rachel Sabbarton ACII, Group Head of Specialty at Lancashire Insurance Group, and Wayne Imrie, Head of London Market Wholesale Executive Risks and Specialty Risks at Beazley. The panel was hosted by Jason Collins, Managing Executive of Specialty and AUB Wholesale at Tysers.
