The theme for this year's world mental health day is workplace mental health. Let us pause and take the time to reflect on our well being and on the importance of taking care of our mental health within our work environment. On this day I'm pleased to announce the newly formed Mental Health Working Group that I am now chairing as part of UCL Computer Science. Following the success of our Impostor Syndrome session, over the coming year we are planning three more events, titled "Mindful conversations": 1. Navigating difficult or toxic relationships within a university setting 2. Managing anxiety and uncertainty in a university setting 3. Dealing with rejection and giving effective, constructive feedback Special thanks to Maitrei Kohli who helped put the proposal together. Thanks also to the team - we will be working together to bring this program of events to UCL over the academic year: Karin Alderson, Kiran Ahmed, Francesca Biondo, Liz Awad, Bernadette Murray, Dr Maryam Bandukda, https://lnkd.in/ez9-yHZN https://lnkd.in/e9wv_ps7 UCL #mentalhealth #academia UCL Engineering

I had the pleasure of co-organizing this year’s Peter Kirstein Lecture at UCL (more info: https://lnkd.in/exPdwgry), where we welcomed the inspirational Prof. Hugh Herr and were honoured to have the distinguished Prof. Peter Kirstein family. It was a privilege to come together and celebrate Prof. Peter Kirstein’s legacy alongside his family and the UCL Computer Science community. The event also featured hands-on demos by our team (Anjana Wijekoon, Zhehua Mao, Laurent Mennillo, Ryman Hashem, Vanni Consumi, Chuang Lu) from the #SurgicalRobotVision group, WEISS - Wellcome / EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences, showcasing groundbreaking advancements in surgical soft robotics and surgical AI. A huge thank you to my fellow co-organizers—Vajeeha Farooq, Amid Ayobi, He WANG, Steve Hailes, Dr Victoria Austin, and Rui Loureiro—for making this event such a success. #PeterKirsteinLecture2024 #HughHerr #Innovation #Biomechatronics #SurgicalRobotics #surgicalAI #ArtificialIntelligence

We were delighted to have Professor Hugh Herr join us to present the Peter Kirstein Lecture 2024 this year. We’re excited to share highlights from the lecture, where Professor Herr (MIT), a leader in biomechatronics, talked about his personal journey which led to bionics research and delved into groundbreaking advances in bionic limbs. From tissue-synthetic interfaces to cutting-edge prosthetics, discover how his work is revolutionising mobility for many with limb differences. The day started with a private tour and demonstrations of our robotics, medical robotics and our Global Disability Innovation Hub for Hugh and guests from Peter Kirstein's family. Later, guests were treated to Hugh's captivating lecture: On the Design of Bionic Limbs: The Science of Tissue-Synthetic Interface. Hugh spoke of his journey as an avid mountain climber to working in pioneering bionics research. Read highlights of the private tour and demos, lecture and fireside chat hosted by UCL experts in assistive technology and medical robotics. 🔗 Watch the lecture (password protected) and read more: https://lnkd.in/e5C_zXCF WEISS - Wellcome / EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences UCL Robotics Institute Dimitrios Kanoulas, Dr Victoria Austin, Sophia Bano, He WANG, Amid Ayobi #Bionics #PeterKirstein #AssistiveTech #robotics #MedicalRobotics

Continuing our celebration of #AdaLovelaceDay 💻 we bring you further examples of women in tech finding solutions to help women and society as a whole. Dr Leonie Tanczer leads the UCL Gender & Tech Lab. She was recently featured in a documentary on Swiss TV. Key figures in the documentary, such as Leonie, highlight how the proliferation of such technologies amplifies the problem. The video also touches on the severe psychological consequences for victims, including feelings of helplessness and, in some extreme cases, suicide, as reported by Magdalena Habringer, a researcher at the FH Campus Vienna.
