About us

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in England, serving a regional, national and international population. It includes Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Solihull Hospital and Community Services, Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield and Birmingham Chest Clinic. We also run a number of smaller satellite units, allowing people to be treated as close to home as possible. We see and treat more than 2.2 million people every year across our sites and our hospitals deliver more babies than anywhere else in Europe. We are a regional centre for cancer, trauma, renal dialysis, burns and plastics, HIV and AIDS, as well as respiratory conditions like cystic fibrosis. We also have expertise in premature baby care, bone marrow transplants and thoracic surgery and have the largest solid organ transplantation programme in Europe. We provide a series of highly specialist cardiac, liver and neurosurgery services to patients from across the UK. We are world-renowned for our trauma care and have developed pioneering surgical techniques in the management of ballistic and blast injuries, including bespoke surgical solutions for previously unseen injuries. As a result of its clinical expertise in treating trauma patients and military casualties, the QEHB has been designated both a Level 1 Trauma Centre and host of the UK’s only £20m National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre (SRMRC). We have over 24,000 members of staff and we are committed to investing in their development and their health and wellbeing. UHB is a Stonewall Diversity Champion and aims to achieve positive change for LGBTQ+ people by creating an inclusive, inspiring and equal environment for both staff and service users.

  • Don’t miss tonight’s episode of 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐬: 𝐀 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡, a "Thrilling docu-series" – The Telegraph. This week ENT surgeon Shahz Ahmed is preparing to operate on Sarah. At just 35-years-old, she has a large bone tumour growing in the sinus area of her head. As the tumour grows, it is pushing into her skull and pressing on her eye. Without surgery, she will eventually lose her sight. ENT surgeon Shahz Ahmed must carefully peel back her scalp and drill into her skull to remove the tumour, working with pinpoint accuracy to avoid damaging her vision, or even breaking into her brain.  In Theatre 5, Mike is facing a life-or-death operation. Initially told his pancreatic cancer was inoperable, hepatobiliary surgeon Nik Chatzizacharias believes he may be able to remove it. But with the tumour wrapped around vital blood vessels, one wrong move could be fatal. Nik won’t know if he can save Mike until the operation is underway.  Elsewhere, surgeons Haitham Khalil and Jamie Vatish operate on Deborah, a mother of three battling breast cancer for the second time. While Jamie performs a mastectomy, Haitham attempts a complex breast reconstruction using tissue from Deborah’s stomach. However, previous radiotherapy has left her blood vessels fragile, making this delicate surgery even more challenging. Tune in tonight at 9pm on Channel 5 to catch the third episode. 📺

  • A multi-million-pound investment project, which aims to make Good Hope Hospital a greener, more efficient hospital, has been completed. The hospital has undertaken a major project, with the aim of being one of the first net-zero hospitals in the UK. The project was made possible thanks to funding from Salix, under the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, which it was awarded in 2022. The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme is run by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and is delivered by Salix. UHB was awarded £35.6 million as part of the scheme to reduce its carbon footprint and ensure its sites become more energy efficient. This has allowed Good Hope Hospital to install heat pumps, commission a new low-temperature-hot-water (LTHW) system and decommission the existing steam distribution system, amongst other things. • “People question how I’ve managed to get ‘round the table’ and what it is I can bring to the conversation…The answer is ‘quite a lot actually’.”   Dawn is a Catering Assistant at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and also supports our colleagues as a union representative.   Outside of work, Dawn is also the chair governor of a local primary school, and she has a passion for inclusion. The skills she has learned from all of her roles have meant Dawn is a great advocate and uses her position to ensure the voices of those working on the “shop floor” reaches important conversations.   In her blog, Dawn shares more about how she can often be underestimated but how she uses that as an advantage and gives an insight into the role our people are playing in improving our culture.   Read more about Dawn in this week’s ‘We are UHB’ blog.

  • QEHB is trialling a new innovative approach to improve the Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH) technique used in radiotherapy to treat cancer in the breast and chest area. By giving patients 60% oxygen, the aim is to extend breath-hold times beyond the current average of around 25 seconds, making treatment faster and more efficient. QEHB is the first hospital in the UK to implement this technique clinically, with early results showing a significant reduction in treatment duration and improved patient experience. Chantel Chantiluke, one of four patients recruited to the study so far, was able to hold her breath for an impressive 2 minutes and 24 seconds.
